Strange Problem Related to Wetting Pants

My son is almost 6 years old. He was potty trained at about 3.5 yrs old and continued to have several accidents weekly after than. He would often not even tell anyone when he wet. This however is not my problem. It got to be fairly often and I tried to never make a big deal about and just sent him to change his pants. All of a sudden I noticed that at times when he has said he has wet his pants he is completely dry. And I don't believe he is trying to be deceitful because sometimes he is really upset about it and it doesn't matter if I tell him he is dry or even show him - he will not believe me. Any ideas of why he may be doing this? He also continues to wet the bed, he wears goodnights and they are soaking wet every single morning. Not sure if this has anything to do with it or not.

What can I do next?

I'm no expert, but this definitely sounds like a sensory issue to me. My own son is shortly going to undergo a sensory motor integration test, but since we haven't had it yet I can't give you any more help in this area.

However, Children's Hospital has a toilet training program (I think it's called "PIP") for kids who have physical or emotional problems that prevent them learning to stay clean and dry. I was investigating it for my son but all of a sudden he started making real progress so we haven't gone ahead with it. But the woman to talk to is Kimberly Dunn, if you're interested. I don't have a number but I'm sure you could call Children's general information and ask about the PIP clinic.

Good luck!

was he doing this all along or did he just start wetting again? how much is he drinking before bed? if he does drink before bed now dont let him anymore, like an hour before bedtime give him his last drink. also studies have shown that children who are potty trained and suddenly start wetting or soiling themselves have been molested.im not saying he has but keep your eyes open.
good luck

Have you talked to his peditritian or has he referred you to a specialist just to make sure his bladder, kidneys etc are all in working order?

I was a bed wetter until I was 13. My parents took me to a speicalist and found a problem with the tube that emptys my bladder, I had some proedure done and stop wetting the bed. I am 42 now, it was a long time ago, so I cant remember all the details but Iam sensitive to the emotional stuff that goes on when your a child and wet the bed. I worry about my own kids having the same issue when they are older. I would have it looked into further. Good luck to you both.

Rest easy, my son has a diagonsis of sensory dysfunction and he too appeared to be trained for a spell but is still wetting at night. I am also a special educator. The confusion around wet or not is probably relating to some sensation that may be bothering him that he is associating or labeling as wet. My suggestion is to have him sit on the potty, or something to get him to "check and move on" there is no point engaging in a debate because very likely their is something that is irritating him at that time. Have you discussed the sensory piece with an OT?

your son may be experiencing bladder spasms. They feel likeyour bladder is just about to empty, and he may at times be able to control them and they subside, leaving him dry. At other times, the spasms may be too strong and he wets. There is also a hormone that is not fully developed in children and may be causing his bedwetting. In any case, he should see a urologist. The spasms are sometimes caused by a neurological problem. I hope this helps.

okay, first talk to his doctor and request a urine specimen to see if he has a urinary tract infection. Then I would strongly recommend a urologist and a neurologist consult. When you say undiagnosed sensory and behavior issues, you should be going straight to a neurologist, like now. Early intervention for sensory/behavior issues is so important. I think it's just important to rule out anything else going on. Hope this helps and let me know how it worked out if you get a chance. -N.

I have a five and half year old who also pees at night though not during day. He soaks through his diapers and will not wake up when he pees. We talked to his doctor about it and he said some children's sphincters are just not mature enough at this point and not to put any negative focus on it. He WILL outgrow it. This docctor has 4 kids all of whom peed at night until 7 years old. I have a friend whose son was 10! My doctor said that 90% of kids who have trouble holding bladder have a family member who did the same as a kid and it is very genetic. So check that out. be gentle on your son. My mother diagnosed many of my brothers and sisters as having ADD and took us to specialists and nutritionists and put us on ritulin and everything and we are really very fine. I am 30 now with twitches from being on ritulin for years. I am not on now and have simply removed sugar and many wheat items. Perhaps have him allergy tested for behavior issues. Be easy. Focusing on the negative aspects can be harmful. Being proactive by talking with his doctor, and perhaps his teacher and a behavioral therapist can be helpful. Lots of luck to you both!
