Strange Behavior in 16-Month Old

My 16-month old has started walking around our house with his eyes covered. He will put one fist on each eye to he can't see a thing and walk around - bumping into chairs, walls, tables, and tripping over toys that are out. He has hurt himself in doing this, although he's not moving fast enough to do any real harm to himself. Has anyone experienced this before? My 1st son did nothing like this so I'm unnerved by this behavior!

What can I do next?

My son did this and my 10 month old daughter does this with blankets. I think is very normal. They are exploring and learning. She will throw the blanket on her head and just walk around, fall, laugh and get up and do it again. He will outgrow it in no time.

My son puts shirts and blankets over his head and does the same... they're just exploring! DS actually laughs when he bumps into something!

Perhaps try and clear an area and play with him as he does this, make it a game!

As someone who had a 1 year old in glasses, the first thing that comes to
mind is to get his eyes checked. Now babies do put things over their heads
and walk around, so maybe I am over reacting. However, I live life, if I have
a concern, better be safe than sorry. Good luck.

Honestly I don't see anything strange about this at all! I know exactly how you feel though...I have a 15 month old and an 11 year old and they are NOTHING alike! So when my daughter did new things I would say the same thing...my son never did that??? I'm sure that won't be the last thing that he does that you are going to question! Good luck! : )

Honestly I think this is a WONDERFUL GAME ... could you think about changing it in this manner ... play HOT and COLD and you do it to have a sound like a YEAHHHH or BOO instead since vocabulary may not be there for HOT vs COLD but this way you can make it a game and a learning thing!

I LOVE that he does this it seems to me as a great developmental tool and shows that he is developing well enough to WANT to experience his environment in different ways please encourage this.

And Patty K may have something to look into and see if there is a concern there as well a simple trip to the Dr for an eye check should suffice.

My son did this at that age (or maybe just a little older) and still does it at 3.

not sure about a baby doing it, but as a child i was fascinated by doing this, experiencing life without vision, and walking backwards lol... not sure why, but i thought it was fun!
