Stool Softeners While Breastfeeding

I gave birth to my son 9 days ago, and had been pretty constipated today. (TMI?) They gave me stool softeners while I was in the hospital, but I don't know what kind they were. I bought Surfak stool softener and was wondering if it was safe to take while breastfeeding... Has anyone used this brand while BFing or know what kinds are safe to take? Thank moms!

What can I do next?

Colace is safe- just ask your obg for the dose...also While in the hospital on bedrest with my twins....the nurses said the best thing to do was eat lots of grapes...they have a high water content and lots fiber plus were gentle!

I was just told yesterday that Colace stool softner is safe to take while pregnant, I would assume for breastfeeding as well. Both my OB and the pharmacist told me it was safe and did not get absorbed into the body. I also googled it and it is considered to be safe on many websites (including the mayo clinic site, which is a reputable site).

After I had my first baby, I was given a prescription stool softener which worked well, I was afraid to stop taking it. They do not want you to strain to go after giving birth.

i am a pharmacist...and yes, surfak is perfectly safe to use. metamucil or fibercon (laxatives which are not absorbed by the mother) are also safe to use. in the future---call your local pharmacist for these types of questions-that's what we're there for!! and the advice you get will be much more reliable than that from a mommy blog!
good luck with your new baby!

It looks like you got your answer, but the stool softeners i got in the hospital never helped. I used metamucil.
