Open allllll the windows, and get some febreeze antimicrobial spray. Within a week the smell dissipates!!
So tis my life with three kiddo's!!!! trying to get ideas on getting the smell out when the grossness hits the carpet. We have a carpet cleaner and carpet sanatizer and have cleaned and cleaned but the not so pleasant smell still lingers. The last time this happened we were moving out of a rental just a few weeks later and to be honest we just waited until the mandatory carpet cleaning during the move to happen but I really don't even know if the professional cleaning took out the smell. So anyone have any thoughts, It's such a small area that was hit but man it packs a smell. I thought about vinigar soak but wasn't sure. Thoughts, remedies, suggestions.

There are enzymatic cleaners (Kids'n'Pets being one) that are sold in grocery stores and Pet stores. The enzymes break down biologicals. They come in HUGE bottles, because you completely *saturate* the area (enough to soak into the carpet padding, and about double the area of the size of the spill/accident/pee/poop/vomit) and let it sit for several hours. The enzymes eat all of the ickiness, microscopic and larger. Then you place a towel over it and soak it up.
I don't like the smell of the enzymatic cleaner (it's not awful, and about a gazillion times better than poo, pee, vomit), so I then clean again after using it. But it's not necessary.
Vinegar will break down oils, but it won't remove the acids, tiny rotting food particles, etc.
Nature's Miracle worked when our dog got skunked. It should easily work for puke. Pet stores sell it.
vinegar for sure, gets all smells out. You can also boil it on the stove, and eucalyptus works too, freshens everything up.
I agree with Riley J.
You can get Simple Solution at Petsmart and, atleast to me, it doesn't smell bad. Walmart also carries it but its called Out.
You can also use it in the washer.
I have a 2 year old daughter, a dog, and a cat and could not live without Simple Solution.
I've never tried Nature's Miracle because it smells like rubbing alcohol so I do not know how well it works.
I would suggest putting a dryer sheet in your vaccuum to freshen the air- the heat from the vac makes the scent of the dryer sheet more intense.
You may also want to consider renting a steam cleaner or hiring someone to clean the affected areas. Remember to do the window treatments and couch cushions too! Anything "fabric" will retain scents for a long time.
Vinegar soak is good.
Enzyme cleaners, like natures miracle...soak it in that.
Also, if you like spice smells, try a little clove oil. Drop some in the carpet cleaning water, and heat some in a burner or on the stove.
One of my favorites (it'll smell like the holidays) is to get a pot, fill it with water, add cinnamon sticks, clove buds, and simmer.
You can also do the same with lemons on the stove in a pot of water. And add some lemon oil to the carpet cleaning water. Smells are gone for good. The deal is to let whatever you are doing, soak into the carpet, because chances are the flu ickies also soaked into the carpet.
Good luck mama!

Natures Miracle. get it at the pet store! it really is a miracle lol. But make sure to use it first, before any other cleaning products.
