Hi everyone,
My mother was diagnosed with stomach cancer on Thursday. Needless to say I am devistated as she is my very best friend. My mother is only 54 years old. I have a son almost 9 months old and it's killing me that this is happening, she loves her grandson and he loves her too. My mother also has two young sons 11 and 8 years old, they are my half brothers. I can't imagine my little brothers having to be without their mother either. This is all so hard for me to take right now. She is going to be having surgery the week after next to remove the tumor. If the tumor has not gone outside the stomach walls then we have hope for a full recovery, if it has then the news is very bad. Has anyone gone through this themselves or with a family member? Is there hope? I have been praying everyday all the time, I have been sending positive energy her way. Anything I can do right now I am doing it. I know you don't know me or my mom personally, but if all of you could keep her in your prayers that would mean the world to me. I know there are so many great people that are on mamasource, so I know that this is probably not much too ask.

Thank you for your support!

-J.

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for your prayers. My mother had the surgery to remove the tumor. They got all of the tumor and the surrounding cancer, however some of her lymph nodes came back positive for infection as well. She is healing now and we are making appt.'s to see Oncologists to see what are next plan is. We for sure know she will need chemo we just don't know how much yet. Again, thank you to you all for your support. I am still hoping and praying my mother will be able to get through the chemo and have many more years with us.

I went through something recently with my mom - we had a scare with a possible brain tumor. Everything ended up working out - she had the less-scary option, which is not life-threatening. Hang in there - I hope you end up with the same results I did. I'm here (as I'm sure all of us are on Mamasource) if you need to talk! :)

So you will know you are not alone in this my Mother had stomach cancer at the top of the stomach and she passed away June 25, 2005. My Father was a retired flight surgeon and took her to Andrews (Air Force), there was nothing they could do except radiation, which she refused... she lived less than 3 months...she was 69 years old.

John Wayne also died this way.....my point is you are in EVERY ONES PRAYERS since Cancer affects almost every family in one way or anther...the good thing is that the Doctor's in your Mothers case would not operate if it were to late. The Doctors have told you correct, if it is outside the stomach wall it is in the blood stream that is not good.....all I can tell you is make EACH Minute Count....if you have FMLA where you work...take a leave of absence....since you will want to be with her....most employers would understand, especially now!

Please let me know how the surgery goes.....I care more than you know! If we help in any way, please let me know!

God Speed to you and your family~!!!!

Dear J.: So sorry about the bad news. My MIL fought uterine sarcoma and was in remission for 2 years before she relapsed in August. Now she has inoperable colon cancer.

When we first heard the news, it was hard for me not think about anything but the worst possible outcome. Cancer is very scary. After a week or two, the reality that treatment is available became the focus. Now, were hopeful that the chemotherapy will be enough to stop the growth and shrink the tumor enough that she can have surgery.

I recommend visiting the American Cancer Society website. They have a lot of success stories that will hopefully help you reframe your thoughts. People do survive, even in the worst cases.

Keep in mind, this is only the BEGINNING. Fighting cancer is a journey. In some cases, a really long journey.

My MIL had the worse possible scenario (the first time) and survived. We're hoping for another miracle.

I know its difficult and the your emotions get the best of you. THERE IS STILL HOPE. My advice is not to treat her like shes sick. Meaning encourage her to walk, get out of bed, do things that she normally would. Keep up her spirits and strength as best you can.

Prayers to you and your family!

I am so sorry to hear about your mom. It is so frustrating to understand why God puts us through trials like this. My mother in law battled ovarian cancer for over three years and ended up passing away a little over a month before my daughter was born. So, I can understand a lot of the feelings you're going through. I was very close to my MIL. My best advice is to take things one day at a time and appreciate every second you spend with her. If you ever need someone to chat with or vent to, I'd be happy to listen. Just send me a private message.

I'm very blessed to have my parents with me. My dad did have surgery for prostate cancer, but it was contained and now he is free of it. I just wanted to let you know that you and your mother will be in our prayers. You have gotten lots of good advice - just take one day at a time.
