Stitches

I cut my finger pretty badly over a week ago and received 9 stitches. Most of what the urgent care doc told me was a bit of a blur but I know he said not to get it wet, that the stitches would need to be removed in 3 weeks and to watch for signs of infection etc. I also called the office when I changed the bandage the next day to ask if I should put neosporin on it and the nurse said no. It has been 10 days now since I was stitched up and I am wondering if I can get them wet at all yet? When I look on the internet almost every site says to wash and dry the area on a daily basis after the first 24-48 hours. So now I am wondering not only if I can get them wet momentarily (like to wash my face) but also wondering if I was supposed to be cleaning them the whole time? Most sites also say to put an ointment on too so I am confused. I am going to call my doc on Monday but I am getting so sick of a one handed shower etc. so I thought I would see what others have been told...

What can I do next?

I was told NOT to use ointment on all of my wounds (trust me--I've had a TON) because the skin actually needs to breath and the ointment suffocates things. If the wound isn't too very deep, the dr. will advise you not to get it wet for so many days/hrs, etc. However, if it is a severe wound, you will be advised to keep it dry because, well, let's face it--have you ever seen what happens when you get skin/scabs wet? Once you're sure the wound is completely closed, then you should be able to submerge it for a brief period. Until then, it's a big no-no. Feel better!

My son tore his knee open and had to get stitches. It gives me the shivers just remembering it. We were not to put any ointment on it and kept it dry for 3 days. After that, he showered with his bandage on (to keep the soap from stinging it) for a few days. Then he just showered as normal and we made sure to let it air out and dry well. Fortunately it was warm enough for him to wear shorts so his pants wouldn't rub on his stitches.
After 10 days, I think you'd know if there was any hint of infection and I would guess it's probably fine to get your stitches wet by now. Your finger won't fall off or anything. I would tape some gauze around your finger so you don't have to worry about your stitches getting tugged on when you wash and rinse your hair, but other than that it should be fine. Just be sure it airs out and dries really well afterwards.
Imagine all the little kids that get stitches. In spite of our best efforts, they get dirty, wet....
I'm pretty sure you'll be just fine.

Best wishes!

I actually stabbed in between my finger (taking the seed out of an avocado) about a year ago and received my first stiches....9 as well! I was advised NOT to use neosporin either but to wash with anitbacterial soap, dry and cover it. I wet it while showering and washing my face. I only used neosporin once my stiches were out.

When I had food surgery, I began soaking my feet 3 days after surgery...after the doc looked at the outcome.
