Stinky Mattress

The mattress in our guest room smells mildewy. It's fairly new so I would rather not replace it. There are no obvious stains to clean. Any suggestions on how to remove odors (it's winter so I can't have it sit out in the sun). Thanks.

What can I do next?

One word......febreeze
it works especially on mildew
spray..let dry...a second application may be required.
But it will smell fresh (like nothing actually)

Try a dehumidifier in the room, right next to the mattress.

I find that a mixture of equal parts of Borax (in the laundry aisle of the store) and baking soda works well at getting odors out of anything. Just sprinkle on and let it sit on the mattress, the longer the better, at least one day and vacuum off. I have used this on fresh pee from a kid on a mattress or on the carpet for pet messes and it gets the odor out.

Another thing you can try are the sprays/powders used to refresh carpets. I can't think of the name of one off the top of my head but there are some really good ones. Just spray or sprinkle it on like you would the carpet and vacuum it off as directed on the can.

I would sprinkle it generously with baking soda. Let it sit a day or at least an afternoon and then vaccuum it off. I would then flip my mattress and repeat the process on the other side. I may even do the box spring as well. Baking soda will absorb the odor just like it does in your refridgerator.
Good luck

Zero Odor is a product that will work. Non-toxic and no residual odor.

I agree with the other suggestions of baking soda and a dehumidifier, I would also add that placing a bowl of charcoal (or charcoal cat litter) in the room will soak up moisture and smells really well.

Have you tried Febreeze? Just make sure to let it totally dry before dressing the mattress. I would spray both sides liberally. That might do the trick.

Hi Kelly,
Buy a box of Baking Soda. Sprinkle it directly on the mattress and then rub it in. Let it sit for a couple of day. Vacuum it off. That should do it. If not try some of the sprays such as Fabreez. Put some dryer sheets in between the mattress and the sheets.

Try putting the mattress outside on a nice day to air it out. When u bring it back in, sprinkle & rub baking soda on it & let it sit for a few hours. Then vacuum it up.

all these ideas are good, but what i have found it get some tea tree oil. mist it on the mattress. it kills any possible mildew. also you can take a mattress cover for that size mattress, put a thick coat of baking soda, your carpet powder or whatever other powder odor eatter you want and put it on the mattress, then put the mattress cover on there and leave it for a week or two, but i am thinking the tea tree oil so you can eliminate what is causing the odor and it does refresh the mattress too.

maybe try a fan in the room, near the bed to help dry if it is damp (dehumidifier is also a great idea, a decent one really works). Then try sprinkling the matress with baking soda let sit for a day and then vacumm, should help with the odor.

Hi Kelly -
Great suggestions. You could also use a good steamer. Just make sure you let it dry well before doing the other side.
