This is so gross! My basement stinks! We have two cats and there box is down there. My husband cleans it all the time but it still stinks. It is partly the box but it just has that stinky basement smell. We leave the door open all the time to let the cats in and out. We are trying to find a new home for one of the cats. She has a habit of not going in her box all the time. I dont know what to do. We thought about a humidifer but I dont know if that will help. We have odor killer things down there and it works great for about 3 days then nothing. It is really embarrising, I dont like to have anyone over. Any adivce anyone can give would be great. Thanks again!

What can I do next?

I highly recommend getting a dehumidifier. I was having similar problems (minus the cats) and purchased a used dehumidifier off of someone on Craigslist, and it has made a world of a difference. Tip: Make sure you buy one with an automatic shut-off for when the basin is full!

Hi S., There are a few things you can do. First you need to clean the basement completely and make sure you don't have any mold growth or dampness. (If you do you need to treat that right away!) To remove the smell of cat pee you should use a mix of white vingar and water after you mop with hot soapy water & it dries. Yes, a dehumidifier will help get rid of the "basement smell" by removing humity from the air and keeping air circulation going in the basement if you center the unit & have a unit big enough for the space. You do have to remember to adjust it in the winter when a house is normally drier. We bought a unit for our first house and that really helped! Also don't forget to change the filter in your furnance at least once a month if you have a forced air unit.

If you have a cat that isn't using it's litter box correctly there is usually some sort of problem associated with that, maybe instead of one cat pan you need two. Or your cat is sick and trying to tell you! Good luck and best wishes.

a dehumidifier would help, also the basement should be cleaned and sealed with Drylock paint to keep moisture out. Paint and seal walls and floor. As far as the cat litter, discard old box and matbe try a liner in the new one. We have two cats also and once the urine penetrates the plastic box its hard to get rid of that smell. The cat who has a bad habit of going outside the box, try some deterant spray sold at pet retailers. Is the cat fixed? Fabreeze spray also is a good quick fix for bad smells.

Good luck!
