Still No Period After 15 Months

I'll chime in with "it happened to me, too." I started my period at 15 months postpartum, and at 17 months, I have yet to ovulate. Perfectly normal stuff.

I just wanted to let you know that I went for about 1 more month after I stopped breast feeding my daughter before I resumed my periods. My doctor would keep telling me it would resume when my body was ready.......(and the really weird thing....I was never regular before my pregnancy, and ever since I restarted, have had a period every month). Hang in there. Those hormones do FUNKY things to us!! : )

I am a Breastfeeding Educator, experienced mom and Doula.
I want you to know that what you are experiencing is normal. Nightime nursing helps delay ovulation. Since every woman and baby dyad is different, no one can predict when you cycle will return.

By the way, your son would likely protest loudly if you did not have milk. Women's bodies will continue to make milk indefinately as long as she has established an initial milk supply and that milk is being removed regularly.

Breastfeeding is a Demand and Supply system.

I personally have known women who have breastfed continually
for years and through pregnancies. Some of them only had one period between children before getting pregnant again.

Same here! Mine was born 5/24/05 and I was down to just night nursing until 1 month ago when I finally stopped because she wouldn't sleep through the night. Everytime she'd wake up she'd have to nurse to go back to sleep. I'm on low-dose birth control as well & still haven't had a period either. People said it was because I was still nursing & on the pill. I go back to my doctor next month so I haven't gotten any feedback from her. I hear it is very common for women to not have a period while breastfeeding. I thought surely I'd start after we finished nursing... Did this not happen with any previous children?

No worries! I breastfed my daughter (now 3) for 14 1/2 months and didn't have a period until one and one half months later....

sometimes our bodies just take a little longer to kick in.

i was told has long as you breastfeed you will not have a period so i would not be concerned about it i am a sahm of 4 and prengant with twin

After my children were born I took a progesterone only birth control pill. This caused me not to have a period until I stopped taking it. Personaly I thought it was really convinent. I wouldnt worry about itif your still breast feeding, just remember to change pills when you wean the baby because the progeserone only pill loses its effectiveness then.

I did the same thing with both of my children...it's perfectly normal. I to was on low dose birth control too and i didn't start my period until just after my son was 15mos. I nursed him at night until he was 28mos, it was great. Enjoy it while you can because it will return.

That sounds right... according to "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" - probably the best book out there on nursing... On average, mothers who practice total breastfeeding the first six months and add solids gradually thereafter will go without a period for 15 months - and some will go as long as 2.5 years!

Mothers who offer the breast for comfort, rather than a pacifier, and allow baby to feed at night tend to be the ones to go longer without a period. I'm at 20 months with no period, so I can attest to that.

Just FYI, since you mention the low dose birth control pill (and I know this is controversial, but I hate for anyone to not know this), you may want to check into how it really works. I took that in the past, but have found information on birth control pills (all of them, honestly, but the mini-pill is one of the worst) that changed my mind about using them. If you consider life to start at conception, you may want to research the abortive effects of the pill. The first line of defense is to prevent conception, but that isn't always successful now that birth control pills are so low dose. So, on occasion, fertilized eggs cannot implant due to how the pill effects the lining of the uterus. There's a short booklet, "Does the Birth Control Pill Cause Abortions?" by Randy Alcorn. He was setting about to disprove this, and it turned out he couldn't. The booklet can be purchased for a few bucks from http://www.epm.org/ or you can read a super-condensed version of it at http://www.epm.org/articles/bcp3300.html Sadly, most doctors and midwives aren't even aware of how the birth control pill's changes over the years have effected how it works. The manufacturers know, but have kept things hushed. Sorry to get off topic, but I hate for women to be ignorant of this...

Hello Miss K....my name is Lali and when I breastfed my kids I too never had a period and much less with taking birthcontrol..so, I wouldn't worry about it unless for some odd reason you begin to get some stomach pains or something along that line.....Hope this helps you a bit...

I've been on the pill for 11 years (except for my pregnancies) and I've gotten to a point where I don't get a period either, even though I know I'm due for it. I don't worry- I know I'm not pregnant and enjoy not having a period! IF I get one, it is sooo light that I don't even need a pad or tampon. I completely enjoy it because when I'm off the pill, I have a horrible period! Don't worry- your body is adjusting to the pill, and you're still breastfeeding.

I have an 18 month old that I chose to breastfeed and the same thing happened to me. I was realy worried. I thought am I pregnant again. I think it was about my 13 or 14 month I started again. The body does go through a lot of changes when us women have babies and it takes time to get them back in order. I understand your concerns but I don't think there is anything wrong. Just wait it out. And enjoy it... LOL I especially wouldn't be concerned if your doctor isn't. Take care.

I started right around then with both of mine. . .it was when they started sleeping through the night that I got mine back. I think this is totally normal.

Hi, I've been breastfeeding continuously for almost 8 yrs... For my first baby, I got my period back when she was 18 mths old. For my second baby, I got it back when she was 15 mths old. I wasn't on birth control, ever. I'm on my 3rd baby and am still period free... he'll be 10 mths tomorrow.

I'm sure everything's fine with you :D BTW, congrats on nursing for that long!!!

Are you on the mini pill? I know that when on the mini pill, you will not get a period.
