hi, i have a toddler and i've been asked to serve jury duty, would they defer me since i am a stay home mom and i take care of my child? just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with this. i was excused the first time and wondering if they will defer me again for the same reason. i dread thinking i have to leave my child with a stranger so i can do the jury duty, no one can care for my child like i can i have no family here in pittsburgh all out of town. thanks.

What can I do next?

Even breastfeeding moms aren't exempt in PA, which is personally think is ridiculous, but jury duty is that, a duty. You can always ask for an exemption, but try to look at it as making a sacrifice for the good of the country. I personally think parents of young children have enormous capacity and and a well-developed sense of justice, and are a valuable addition to any jury! If it really is an undue hardship, I'm sure the judge will excuse you, but most people have to make some pretty big sacrifices in terms of pay or caregiving duties when called for jury duty. It's just part of living in a democracy.

Ugh, TERRIBLE...they will insist on putting your child in the county building "daycare" which is not the most desirable place.
Want to get out of jury duty, HYPOTHETICALLY (if anyone in civil service is reading this)...then during the questionaire or viore dire make sure you disclose one of your unwavering beliefs. For example, if you cannot be objective during a gun trial because you think guns are the devil and anyone who owns one has GOT to be guilty of SOMETHING...you get what I mean. If you have a very strong opinion that would render you completely biased during any trial, the defense won't want you! I'm not telling you to lie...just if you have a strong opinion...TELL them..it might make you undesirable to either side and not someone they would want on the jury.
(Btw this advice came from a prominent lawyer lol)
Good luck!

I have not been asked to do jury duty, but I do believe they have child care. Call the number on your notice and ask. It is hard to get out of this, or so I have heard! Good luck!

I was asked to do jury duty when my son was 16 mo old. I called to be excused and they said you could do that, but it was only for 6 months and then you could/would be called again. They do have a daycare at the courthouse, but be aware that it is not just for juries, but for anyone who comes to the courthouse who needs childcare. Since you get your notice with several weeks to prepare, I ended up having my mom come in from out of town to watch my son while I did just one day of jury duty. Hope that helps.
