Static Electricity

Does anyone have any suggestions on ways to prevent static electricity? During this time of year I always seem to get "shocked" when I touch anything metal. I've tried spraying Static Guard and always use Bounce dryer sheets when doing laundry...still doesn't seem to help. Thanks!

What can I do next?

M., I also carry an unused dryer sheet in my coat pocket. I don't get shocked and I smell 'fresh' too!

I prefer the liquid softner as I get shocked from the dryer sheets some people don't but it never seems to work on me as I can feel the clingyness on the clothes that are silky like pjs. You can buy the downyball which you just put the softner in it an through it in with the start of wash. I don't buy any particular brand sometimes it is downey if its on sale. Hope my suggestion helps. D.

try using the liquid fabric softeners. Downy (mountain spring scent) is my favorite because the fresh smell stays longer in the clothes and don't have problems with static. Others work well as well but the smell doesn't seem to stay as long. I like the liquid a lot better than the dryer sheets. You can also buy a ball that will dispense the fabric softener on the rinse cycle if your washer doesn't have a fabric softener dispenser.

If you have a problem in your house -- consider getting a humidifier that is put on to your heating system. That will work. If you can't afford a whole house humidifier, try the ones you put in each room.

Hi M. - I have to run a humidifier in my home - I use two one gallon humidifiers - one in bedroom., and one in dining room. No more static electricity It also helps my sinuses. I have to start with the humidifiers as soon as I turn on the heat. Sincerely, G.

Hey M.! None of that ever worked for me either! I shop from a different store that has been in business for 23 years and buy all of my household products from them because they are the best of science and nature without any toxic chemicals. Those product you are using have lots of chemicals in them too. There are a couple of products that I use that I know would work really good for you too. Please respond personally or visit www.2abetterlife.com or www.2liveabetterlife.com and I would love to get you more info. on how you can prevent or alleviate the static altogether with safer and healthier products :) Have a great day!

I know, it's pretty much inevitable this time of year. The static builds from the dry heat in our homes. You can get a whole house humidifier which hooks up to your furnace. Or room humidifiers may work. If that doesn't help eliminate some of the static, try going barefoot, if your tootsies don't get too cold. Good luck!

Humidifiers help with static in your home air. Winter is a time where moisture in the air is very low. The Downy Ball filled with LIQUID fabric softener works much better then dryer sheets for static in the winter. Also, if it's static electricity in your hair, conditioner helps. It's very dry this time of year, so those things really make a difference. Everything you can do to promote moisture is highly recommended. Hope this helps!

I would suggest getting at least one humidifier to run in your house...if the house is on multiple levels you might find that you need one for several different locations in your home. That should help correct the problem and make your winter a lot less "shocking"!!!

Hi, M.! I agree with Diane....I have the same "zapping" problem this time of year also, but unfortunately for my 2 cats, it's not just metal I get zapped on! LOL I personally think it's the shoes and coats I wear when it's cold that causes the static electricity, but I do use liquid softener, and I put some of the liquid fabric softener in a spray bottle with water, spray it on the outside of my clothes, shoes, skin and furniture. I have a wool coat that also causes a lot of static, so I also keep a dryer sheet in the pocket for when I'm out...use that to rub on my clothes if there is static, and no more zaps! It's the only time I use the dryer sheets, as they don't seem to work for me at all. The softener also makes your house and clothes smell fresh and clean...just my suggestion...hope you become zap-free soon. Take care and good luck!

Have you tried getting a humidifier? I think static is partially caused by the dryness in the air, so adding moisture into the air in your house may help. Good luck!

Seems like the ambient air is too dry. Are you wearing plastc/rubber shoes and clothing?

You need a humidifier. We have one on our furnace, but we also run the smaller room humidifiers when it's really dry. If you don't have a humidifier, you can set some water in a big pot to simmer on the stove or in your crock pot to add humidity to the air.

I agree ... use a humidifier. They are inexpensive to buy and to use and will make a world of difference.
Also, be sure to pick up your feet when you walk. Shuffling, even a little creates static as well as scooting in and out of chairs. Stand, or sit, but don't scoot. Sounds silly, but it helps !
