Starting Solids - Waterbury,CT

My daughter is exclusively breastfed and just had her fourth month checkup. The pedi said we could start cereal, fruit & veggies. My son was fed both breastmilk and formula. I started him on cereal at 4 months and then fruits and veggies at five months. He ended up with Peanut and Nut allergies. Even though we have no family history of allergies.
With my daughter I planned on waiting until she was 6 months old to start her on solids. (She will not get any formula.) However, she stopped sleeping at night. She would easily sleep 10 hours at nighttime without a feeding. Now, she sleeps for 1/2 hour clips and wants to nurse all night along. Ok, its only been two nights of this, but I'm not used to it! I'm wondering if she isnt getting enough calories during the day. Maybe I should give her some cereal...But, I'm nervous about allergies. Is it worth it??? Also, she is drooling up a storm and chewing on everything insight. Her pedi didnt see anything on her gums to suggest teething. And, she is only four months old, so its a little early for teeth. I dont want to be giving her Tylenol for her gums, when her real issue is lack of calories. HELP!!
Additional Info: My daughter was 9 lbs 2 oz at birth. And she now weighs 13 1/2 lbs. My son showed signs of a peanut allergy at 13 months after I gave him a thin spread of peanut butter on toast. I ended up giving her Tylenol last night and she slept like a rock until 9:30 this morning. I'm not giving her cereal just yet...We'll see how she does tonight. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I started her on Organic Whole Grain Rice cereal. She loves it. She eats every last drop. She goes longer between nursing, and I'm finally able to get my butt of the couch instead of just sitting there nursing her all day. Now, my milk supply is all screwy, so if you have any advice on that matter, please check out my other posts! ('m waiting until 6 months to start fruits and veggies)

My daughter is 5 months old....and she started drooling ALOT when she was 3 months old and 2 teethed poked through on the day she turned 4 months old...so anything can happen.

Talk to the ped about your concerns..as legit as they are, you don't want to deprive your daughter at the same time. Make an appt now...and see what he/she suggests. We were giving our daughter cereal (in the bottle) by the time she was 3 1/2 - 4months. (I breastfed for 2 1/2 months, but also supplemnted with formula becuase my supply was not sufficient enough...and then at 2 1/2 months I literally dried up....it still saddens me!) And now we also give her solids in between bottles...she sleeps through the night, but then again she always had...so I really can't say that that is the reason why...

Nontheless..good luck!!

well as far as to early for teeth it's never to early my daugther got her first teeth at 4 months.
now as far as cereal my kids started cereal at 3 1/2 to 4 months and none of them had problems.then at 5 months veggies and then at 6 months fruit and juices.
she's in the age where she is more active with the turning over and soon to come sitting and crawling.i think you should start her off with barley cereal.see how that goes...good luck

Hi Crystal,
In response you your first question about feeding. How much does she weight? How long did it take before your son started having a problem with allergies to the baby food? My son Thomas, who is now 15 but I remember it like it was yesterday, was 10lbs 9 oz, and he was up every 30 minutes wanting anything he could get, I started him on cereal at 10 days old. He just was not getting enough from the formula. After we started just doing a few baby spoons at a time, he begin to be more content for longer periods of time.
With your issues of allergies its hard to say. You want to be careful but yet you need your baby to be full in order to get some kind of content from her. It has been a long time since I have bought baby food, but is there a way to look on the baby cereal box and see if it has nuts? Or anything containing nuts?
I can fully understand your delema and concerns. But in all honesty what you may have to do is, maybe get a box of cereal for her, and feed her 1 baby spoon full. Then just wait and see? If she reacts in the same manor of your son, then you know you cant do it. If she does not, move on to 2 baby spoons full, until you feel comfortable.
I hope this has helped you. Im from NY and the next time I am in the grocery store I will look at the baby cereal here, and see if I can see anything containing or not containing nuts.
Please let me know how things go.
Sincerly
R.

First, the pedi suggested that you could start soilds, but you really don't have to. If you want to wait until 6 mos then wait :) It is totally up to you. I started my daughter on soilds around 4 1/2 mos (she is 6 mos now). We started with rice cereal & moved to adding fruits & veggies a couple weeks later. I thought my daughter was also teething at 4 mos & the pedi said the same thing & she still doesn't have teeth yet. Babies' sleep patterns change a lot so it is possible that maybe her sleep is off? We had something similar happen but it passed after a bit. I hope things are getting better for you since you posted this! :)
