hi mamas (and dads if you are on here). my lo will be having surgery to correct her feet just around the same time that she turns 6 months. i was hoping to start solids around then, but i am not sure how well that will be received. i was thinking about starting her on a cereal a couple of weeks early (at about 5 1/2 months) so that there wont be too many new things happening at once. she already loves her highchair (she gets breast milk popsicles in it) and loves to play with her spoon. she will even allow me to spoon liquid or partially frozen (very small soft pieces) breast milk into her mouth without any objection so i dont think she will be too opposed to cereal. do you think 2 weeks shy of 6 months is still too early for cereal?

What can I do next?

I would wait till after the surgery, it's not something she needs to have so holding off won't be a big deal, and as someone mentioned she'll probably not be interested afterwards so i see no real point in starting before then.

I think it is too early to start solids, I really believe that starting too early causes food intolerances and maybe even allergies. But that's just my opinion based on my experiences. With all the surgery going on, just keep up the breast milk and her normal routine, there's no need to mess with what's working at such a stressful time.

PS I just wanted to ask if you baby has clubfoot? because that can be successfully corrected without surgery.... if so, and you want more information from someone who's been through it, you can PM me.

A little too early. We started about 9 months, and didn't totally switch until 1 year.

Your LO will let you know when it's time. :)

Since she will be having surgery soon, I would actually wait to start more solids. I wouldn't want to risk introducing a food that doesn't agree with her that would cause a delay in the surgery.

I would keep giving her the breastmilk pops. You could even try a little bit in a sippy cup while in the high chair.

don't freak out her system with new things as she goes for surgery. It's great to keep up the nursing as long as you can! Especially since it will be comforting when she goes in for, and comes out of surgery.
I don't understand why parents feel the need to rush their children into solids. I'm not dissing you, just wonder..... She has her whole life to eat solids. Let her stay a baby as long as she can. She will let you know when she's ready for solids. Follow her lead.

Sometimes when we give our babies solid foods for the first time, they can get constipated. I wouldn't want her to go through that before or right after her surgery. I'd wait on the solids or cereal if I were you. Good luck with the upcoming surgery!!!

I started my kids at 4 months on cereal and veggies at 5 months and fruits at 6 months, with full knowledge of my pediatricians. So I don't think it's too early. However, don't be surprise if she stops eating after the surgery. It's a big deal. She does seem like she will respond to eating well.
