For the pain and cramps, find an herbalist and ask for crampbark. It tastes horrible but works great.
I have an 18 month old that I recently weaned from nursing. So since I was not nursing I got back onto my old birth control pills instead of the POP pills I was taking while breastfeeding...within a few weeks I started my period for the first time in awhile...I did'nt have it when pregnant, of course, then while nursing that year and a half I had the usual bleeding after having the baby but following that I have'nt had a period. Now I started, it's really light and the cramps are so bad...and I'm a tolerable person to most pain, I did'nt use meds during childbirth for example. Is there any reason this is hurting so bad, worse then I remember them ever being...or anything anyone can think of that I can try to ease the pain. I'm not big on medication like pills or pain killers.
Well the cramps slowly got less and less through the last few days, I'm soooo glad I am done for this month! Thanks all for your help!

My daughter said that her periods hurt worse for awhile after delivery. Her periods resumed much earlier than yours have. I think that the periods may be more painful at the beginning because you have been without and your hormones have changed to get them started again. However, I suggest that you check with your doctor. I think this is a question that could be handled over the phone. His nurse might even be a better person with whom to talk.
I always had very painful periods. A heating pad on either my stomach or back frequently helped.
And the doctor prescribed Ibuprofen to be started the week before my period started. I wasn't taking it for pain relief. It altered prostoglandin, a hormone I think, that is a part of what creates the pain so that the pain didn't happen.
Sometimes the classic knee/chest position helped especially in combination with heat.
My daughter sometimes gets relief by soaking in a hot bath tub. She still has cramping some months and didn't have any before giving birth.
I have read that the return of your period (particularly when you haven't had it in so long, I didn't get mine back until 2 months after I quit nursing at 9.5 months), can be more painful, crampy than usual. If you're really concerned I'd call the doctor's office - at least they can either confirm that this pain is normal or have you come in to check it out.
First of all, if I were in your position I would consult with my doctor just to make sure that there isn't something wrong. There probably isn't but I think it is better to be safe then sorry.
I know that a lot of people have suggested heating pads, if you are like me and are a very busy person and don't have the time to lay down with a heating pad you could try the Thermacare heat wraps. They go on your body like a belt with velcro and it provides heat for up to 8 hours.
My first few are always a little bit more painful. I remember one being so bad that I thought I might have gotten pregnant (again) and I was having a miscarriage. But when I went to the doctor they couldn't explain anything. They will dull down just give it some time. I've found that curling your knees up actually make mine worse. Try laying on your stomach on the floor, it helps my cramping. You will get through! Good luck!
Oh honey I feel your pain. I had the exact same problem. My son is now 3 and a half and after I had him when I started my period I would get cramps and severe back pain. I seriously thought I was in labor again. I took myself to the dr. and he told me this is normal. Apperantly pregnancy completly puts your body through the ringer and some women who have never had cramps before will get them. I have tried everything under the sun to get rid of them, the only thing I have found was a couple of IB profin and then laying on the couch with a heating pad on your stomach and one on your back if you have back pain like I do. It sucks but the Dr. did say that it may go away when I get pregnant again.
Hey C.!
Heating pads over the abdomen, and massage of the abdomen, and low back have both worked for me. There are also some PMS herbal remedies available on the market. Try Oakway Health Center, or Tracy Chiropractic Clinic and ask for ideas.

Hi C.,
You might want to have your doctor(ob/gyn) test you for endometriosis...
Best of luck!
My periods have changed after every child ( I have 4 ). You could chat with your doctor if you have any concerns.
A friend of mine told me that since she's had her 2 children, her periods are A LOT worse. She said that they are heavier and she gets severe cramps now. I would ask you doctor about it. It may just be because it's your first one and you haven't had one in such a long time!

I get pretty bad cramps. Meds don't always work very well for me forthe cramps but a heating pad on your stomach or even the one time use ones will help with the pain.
