Hey Mama's,

I just started my son on rice cereal this past friday, and he loves it. My question is how long should I wait to start him on stage 1 veggies? We have decided to give him all of the veggies and then incorporate fruit.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We stuck with cereal for a month, going from Rice to Oatmeal to mixed cereal. We started veggies (green beans) on this past monday night and he hated them, but tried them again last night and gobbled them down. We are going to go to a new veggies next monday night and see how he does. Thank you all for your great advise.

I started my son on rice cereal around 4 months, my pedi said that was fine, mostly as a practice food once a day and then fed him more around 5 months. Then per my pedi's advice started him on veggies at 6 months and introduced fruits at 7 months. He is 11 months now and is eating soft finger foods ( I think it was around 8-9 months we introduced this)... saltines crakers low sodium are his favorite, they melt in his mouth and were a lot easier for him than those biter biscuits.

I am really surprised because my pedi as well as other mothers I know don't start babies on any solids until at least 5 months.

I would personally talk to your pedi first.
Good Luck

Hi J.!

Per my daughter's pediatrician, we started her on cereals at 4 months and veggies between 5 and 6 months, then fruits. And of course, feed him the same veggie a couple times in a row before moving on to the next to make sure of allergies. That way if he has a reaction to something, you will know most likely which food caused it. Good luck!!

The best advise I have on feeding baby food is take it slow and wait the three to five days before introducing a new food. I did not take it slow enough with my daughter and she has multiple food allergies that took us forever to figure out. An allergic reaction can be as mild as a rash, upset tummy type of reaction at first so pay attention. I always thought it would be obvious if she was allergic like a swollen face, but that is not always the case.
Have fun.

When you start them on babyfood you need to start them w/ all the green veggies first. Like if you start with green beans feed it to him for a couple of days just to make sure he's not allergic to it. When you're done with that start on the next green food until you have gone through all of the green. But do just one for maybe two days just to make sure he's not allergic. Then when you get done with green move to another color do that the same way. When you get through all of the veggies then you can move to the fruit and do that the same way. When you get done doin all that then you can start giving him a fruit and veggie when he eats. I would even give him a fruit with the cereal. Mix it up or something. Well, let me know how it goes. Hope this can help you.
