Start Solids on Vacation?

Hey moms,
Well I know I should have this down, now that I am on my second baby, but I don't!;) With my first son, I started him on rice cereal at about 4 months. But he had reflux and it took lots of milk to keep him full, so some cereal did wonders. My now five month old has no reflux problems and is a major chunk, so I haven't worried about starting solids. I am going to be out of town when he turns six months old. So what's the deal, should I start solids immediately at six months, even on vacation? I know that is typical growth spurt time, but I was thinking holding off a week to be back home might be better for us, that way I can get a little schedule going etc. Any thoughts, is waiting a week or so past the six month bday any big deal? Thanks!

What can I do next?

There is no rush.
No worries.
You can wait.
He's not weaned yet, right? So giving him what you are giving him now... breast or Formula is fine.
On-demand... 24/7.

If you are waiting until he is six months old, there is no harm in waiting an extra week (even though I'm sure you are excited to try them out)! Personally, I would want to know that my trusted doctor is nearby God forbid there is an emergency. Have fun on vacation!

I'd say it's a complete judgment call on your end. Just as if wouldn't be a big deal to wait a week or two, you could probably also start a week or two earlier when you're home. I think it would be a cute memory that vaca was the beginning of solids!

I started my son on solids at 4 months. I also have a sister who started at 6 months and another sister who didn't start until 8 months. I wouldn't bother trying to start it on vacation. Waiting another week won't hurt anything!!

I would wait until you are home. On the outside chance that your baby has any allergies, when you begin introducing new foods is when they will likely turn up. I wouldn't want to find that out while out of town on vacation.

Also, if he has any tummy troubles (constipation or gas) from starting solids, it could make him a grumpy baby. Also not something you want to be dealing with on vacation.

I would just wait. What's a week?

There is no rush to start solids. Six months is the absolute earliest to start them. I'd wait. If he has any issues with solid foods, you want to be home to deal with them, not on vacation.

You don't have to start solids at six months. Some moms wait to 7 months or more. There's no harm in waiting if you want to, so if waiting till your home is easier, go for it!

When ds turned 6 months (he's 13 months now), we were celebrating Thanksgiving out of town. We let him try a little boiled yams, but waited until we were home to actually start solids (a week or so after he turned 6m). He's happy and healthy and loves food!

my baby just turned five months. our pedi told us that we should start her on stage one baby food. she is already eating cereral. she is 98% for weight. she is chunk. i think you could wait as long as you wanted too. but if it was me i would start him now and get it going before the vaca. have fun.

I would wait, a week is not a big deal. Six months the earliest they recommend so later isn't a problem. Also, solids are messy and a pain to haul around. Take a break on vacation and continue what you are doing now. I am sure he won't have an allergic rxn to the first foods but why risk it while away from home. Enjoy your vacation!

I was in the exact same situation! Our son turned 6 months while we were on vacation. I just waited until we got home. 1 week is not going to hurt. At this point, baby food is just practice they aren't getting any nutrition from it really.

Have a great vacation!

I agree with the other posters that waiting is okay and a good thing. Who wants to worry about a new feeding routine and the possibilities of allergic reactions while on vacation? Enjoy the vacation on the routine you have in place now and when you get back start the fun of introducing solids!

Enjoy!
