We just bought a 2 story house and I need some recommendations on which saftey gates to purchase and install. What brand do you recommend and did you have them drilled into the wall and bannister? When we visit my sister-in-law we just use a doggy gate that we can move readily but this is a different story. My 2 year old's room is upstairs so it needs to be more convienient and permanant. Thank you for your suggestions.

What can I do next?

DreamBaby brand gates are great. We just researched gates and bought this brand (on Amazon). At the top of the stairs we drilled it into the walls (because we have 2 walls at top that worked great). At the bottom, we are using the pressure mount to attach to the banisters on both sides. We bought the banister conversion kit to do this. We are very happy with them. Also, most of our friends who have gates have bought this same brand.

We have one of these:

And I can't say enough about it. It's WONDERFUL. The kids can't climb it, since it's mesh, and it retracts so you don't have to move the thing out of the way when you don't need to have it up.

I do home childcare, so I have many stair gates (top and bottom in my multi level home), plus doorway gates. I think I have 8 of these all together in the house. But Evenflo makes Wooden ones that you mount. The older style is plain (what I have) but they also make a "nice" looking one in a dark or a light wood.

Mine have held up thru 14 years of day care and also having a 160 pound dog for 10 years in there (and penning him in areas to keep him off carpet during rainy days, etc). Lots of opening and closing, is my point..and they work great still!
