St Thomas, Virgin Islands - Have You Been?

We are taking a family trip to St Thomas Virgin Islands. We are bringing our three children. For those that have been, what would you say is a MUST see? Any tips on traveling? We rented a condo that is right on the beach, so we plan to spend lots of time swimming...but what else should we do? We are staying 8 nights.

What can I do next?

We spent a week at the Ritz and it was THE BEST VACATION OF OUR LIVES. The staff was amazing and we spent most of the time on property, swimming and hanging out. We did venture to the store once, but found it was cheaper to just call down to the concierge and have them shop for us. When we returned to the room, our fridge was full of food....and we had been at the beach. It was awesome.

The island is small and downtown, where the ships come in to port, is busy and not as clean as you'd think. Before you head into the port area, make sure no ships are coming in that day....it gets WAY too busy.

Megan's Bay is a MUST...gorgeous. Spend the day there.

We chartered a 53' foot boat from Blue Tang Yacht Charters for the day and went over to quiet coves to snorkel. We had lunch on Norman Island, which is the island that is believed to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write Treasure Island.

I would just stay put and enjoy the tranquility of the island.

Get food on the way in, since you have no idea where the stores are and it will save you money. We brought an entire suitcase of food with us, things we were pretty sure you can't get there.

I'll try and find the name and number of the guy who drove us around. He was really good....and not too expensive.

PS Make sure you have your passports, if you decide to go to the British Virgin Islands.

I've been there, quite a few years ago now.
St. Thomas is a rocky mountainous island so, although truly beautiful, there aren't miles and miles of sprawling sandy beaches.
Definitely take a trip to St. John's (where Endless Love was filmed) for a beach trip!
Spend part of a day in Charlotte Amalie to check out the shops, places t eat, etc. Very charming. Great gold bargains.
Have fun!

A cruise I went on years ago stopped there. Only had time to snorkel on
St John's that time.
My accountant moved there and invited me to visit. We went on a kayak outing with marine biologist that was awesome. It included snorkeling.
Here is a great website for info: http://www.usvi.net/
Have fun!

I was there briefly on a cruise stop about 7 years ago with our kids, 5 and 8 at the time. There was an aquarium that wasn't very big, but it seemed about right for the ages of our kids and they enjoyed it.

My brother lived there and we'd go visit him. He ran one of the charter vessles.
I concur that megan's bay, the beach and Charlotte Amalie (sp) are great sights.
Also, agree that you need to get out off the island. Hop over to the BVI for snorkeling trip and go to Foxy's (if it is still there. . . ) It is/was across the bay from Michael Jordan's vacation home (as if we care about things like that - LOL).
You will have a great time.
Also, depending on the time of year you go surfing is an option. (hint, summer is not surfing season there).
Have fun!!
EDIT** OH - And there was a fun little jerk place in the parking lot of a hotel where the mamas & papas used to live. They put little plastic animals in your drink - even soda - great live music!
I will talk to my brother and find out if there are any "local" things you should check out, places to eat, etc.
