Hi Moms,

We decided to get out of this Dallas heat and head to St. Louis for the week-end. We have a friend there we will visit but she does not have kids and is older and not part of the kid scene. We are planning to go to the zoo, Children's Museum and Grant's Farm. Any thing else not to be missed or any restaurant suggestions. Also we were thinking of staying in the West Port area, is this a safe area with restaurants and such for families?

Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I have heard the City Museum is super fabulous, but I've never been there. I did want to say that you must go to Ted Drewes frozen custard...it's the bomb!

Instead of Grant's Farm I would recommend something indoors such as the City Museum. Kids love this and it is right down town. If you have never done the Arch I would recommend that as well. We have some AWESOME restraunts on the hill too! My all time fav place to eat is the Braccanta Brazil (sp?) it is really expensive and not kid friendly. Great place for a date night though.

Edit: Good call Tori H. :)

While at Grant's Farm don't forget to stop into Ulysses S Grant National Historic Site. www.nps.gov/ulsg Of course, there is the Historic Courthouse (Dred Scott case) and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (a.k.a, The Arch). www.nps.gov/jeff

I also would suggest the Magic House... I went there as a kid and loved it and it's so much more now than what it was 20+ years ago!

Enjoy your trip!

We just got back from there on 7/31. Unfortunately for us at that time, it was still very hot there too. But hopefully it's gotten better. I just wanted to add that the Magic House is a great place to take the kids to. We took my 8 year old and my sister's 5 year old and they loved it. It is huge and they have all kinds of fun activities for them. Plus for us, it was indoors. We wanted to go to the zoo and to Grant's Farm but didn't make it because of the heat. Maybe you'll have better luck. Have fun!

My daughter LOVED the magic house when she was that age. I'm not sure if that's the same as the Children's museum or if it's something else.

Grants farm is THE BEST.

Have fun!

Well good news the weather is finally breaking here. We are in the 80s from time to time. :p

West Port is fine, not the best but fine. It is a strange area, nice, crappy, nice, crappy. What I mean is for the most part is okay but there are some bad areas close but then what area isn't like that.

Magic House is a little closer to you and even better than City Museum. In Crestwood there is a place called Monkey Joes, it is inflatable bouncing equipment, not very expensive, kinda a good place to wear them out if the weather is bad.

If you stay in West Port there is a restaurant called Helen Fitzgeralds, family friendly, moderate priced (like TGIs and the like) best wings in the world. Okay maybe not the world but I hated chicken wings until I tried them. :)

I wish I could be more help. I tend to avoid kid restaurants like Chuck e Cheese, I don't like unattended kids, sorry.

If you want water fun, a lot of the munis have pools. There is one really close to West Port but I can't remember the name. I think it is on Dorsett like Helens is. I suggest the muni water parks cause they are just as wet as Six Flags but a heck of a lot cheaper.
