what if you try putting a stick of butter in a glass bowl and leave it out? i do that and have no problem with my butter. Good Luck
I'm looking for butter that tastes good and is highly spreadable right out of the fridge. I would prefer it be as close to "real" butter as possible, but I'm really tired of lumps of butter that won't spread on toast. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Thanks for all the great suggestions! I'm going to look into the butter dish for the counter/cupboard, but with the kids, shopping happens infrequently or online, so in the meantime, I'm trying the spreadable with olive oil. Thanks!!

I like using a french butter keeper aka a "butter bell". The butter stays spreadable and freash for a long time in one.
It's ok to leave it out on the counter and contrary to what good marketing/advertising may lead you to believe, it's healthier than vegetable oil spreads, especially if you buy cultured pasture butter. If you're not 100% comfortable with leaving it out, or you don't use it very often you can leave half the stick (or 1/4) at a time and keep the rest refrigerated until you need it.
We keep one stick out (technically in the cupboard), and the rest in the fridge. Covered butter takes several weeks (usually apx 6-12 weeks depending on temp) to go rancid at room temperature, and months if you buy a butter bell thingmy. We just keep it on a dish. As we near the end of it, just unwrap another stick from the fridge and put it on the dish. In case of "emergency", zapping it at 5 second intervals on each of the 4 sides of a stick softens it to room temp butter.
We just leave our butter out. We cover it in a butter dish, leave it on the counter and it is just fine. Can you just do this instead of buying a different butter?
I use Land O Lakes spreadable butter with Olive Oil. It's ingredient list is REALLY short: sweet cream, olive oil, and salt. Tastes good and if you take out the olive oil, it would be butter.
Yes the Land o Lakes butter with olive oil is awesome and spreadable, AND better for you then butter. Olive oil is very good for you-look it up gals! Now if you don't like the taste of olive oil you are outta luck. Margarine is bad for you and also tastes bad.
land o lakes whipped butter also land o lakes spreadable butter
I know that you have gotten suggestions for the counter, but there is also the option of a butter bell. It puts the butter in water and keeps it fresh while still keeping it at room temp.
The butter on the counter has always been pretty much the way we go but now that we live in Texas, it's not always an option because even with the a/c on in the summer it gets melty. I like the Land O Lakes spreadable with canola oil instead of the olive oil. The olive oil one has a bit of a strange taste and my husband refuses to use it.
My husbands grandfather has a stick of butter on a dish right next to the stove ALL THE TIME! It doesn't go bad for some reason. He cooks with it, spreads it on his toast and he has NO issues. He is 96 years old, was a DAIRY FARMER and still lives at home ALONE (his wife died at 89).
We have turned into freaks where fears of everything are concerned. Try leaving the butter out. Don't buy that spreadable junk. It isn't good for you NO MATTER WHAT THEY TELL YOU!
I look at Al (My husbands grandfather) and realize that he knows more than we do...
Best of luck to you!

We use " Moove over butter" from walmart it tastes great and is really creamy.
I've always left it out on the counter; learned it from my grandmother. Works like a charm--you'll always have soft butter.
We like Earth Balance and Smart Balance.
Land O'Lakes has spreadable butter which is very good and highly spreadable!

We use the Land-o-Lakes spreadable butter that comes in a tub. We really like it!
We like Land O Lakes, and the one with Olive Oil is really good but not all stores carry it.
Other than the summer months, I leave our butter out in a butter dish on the counter. We've never, ever gotten sick. You can also mix olive oil and butter together to keep it softer too. Stick with real butter instead of all of the artificials...it's scary what they do to your body.

whipped butter I leave out, covered or in a butter bell as someone else has mentioned.
Country Crock has always been the easiest for me to spread. I have had bad issues with whipped, land o lakes and some of the other brands suggested. I dont use Country Crock anymore but i doubt they made it stiffer.
Country Crock is the best. Not the regular country crock margarine, look over by the butter. It comes in two different size containers and is clearly labeled "spreadable butter" and it is just butter that is whipped and I think a little bit of vegetable oil mixed in to keep it soft. Land o lakes is ok but it is still kind of hard when you take it out of the fridge.
I ditto the Land O Lakes. I absolutely LOVE rea butter, and personally can't stand the thought of it being left out on the counter at room temp. Spreads great on toast!
Try 'I can't belive it's not butter' It is healthier than regular butter too
Earth Balance!!! I just bought 2 containers at Trader Joes an hour ago. We go through it like, uh butter! They sell it at Whole Foods and it's about $3.50 per lb.. I've tried most of the other stuff out there, but this stuff is the healthiest faux butter that tastes great on everything.
Most people who use real butter keep it on the kitchen counter. I usually remember when I put it out so that I can toss it after some time has passed. If I end up without the butter from the fridge being ready to go out when I run out I put some in the microwave on about 30-40% for 15-20 seconds at a time, it melts to too runny if it is on high.
I really like the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter brand. We have tried others here and there but really none taste and spread as good.
My daughter-in-law has always kept a stick of regular butter on the counter for the 12 years I have known her. No one has gotten sick yet.
I like Land O Lakes Light spreadable in the green tub.
We also use the Land O Lakes spreadable butter and like it! It comes in a pretty small tub, and is kind of expensive, but it doesn't have a bunch of fake stuff in it and it tastes good!
Land-o-lakes with olive oil. Sounds weird but it is really good. The kids love it too. You can take 1 T. of regular butter and put it in the microwave for 10 seconds or so (watch it so that it doesn't explode).
We leave our butter out on the counter in a covered glass butter dish, and it's never been a problem. In the really hot months of summer it might start melting a little and then I'll put it in the fridge once in a while. But mostly I just leave it out and it works out just fine.
I use GHee. It is clarified butter that comes in a jar. You can leave it on the shelf with no need to refrigerate.
any spreadable butter out of the fridge is going to be highly unhealthy. even earths best isnt as spreadable as youd think because its healthy...id invest in a butter dish you can keep on the counter ( check out Williams Sonoma)

Once every week or so I get out my hand mixer and blend together 1 to 1 parts of good olive oil and butter. It stores in the fridge and is spreadable healthier than all butter and has no special chemicals or other fats holding it together
A few other people already recommended this, but real butter is fine on the counter for about a week (maybe longer). Margarine is just the food scientists' best guess. It's always been promoted as being healthier, but never been actually shown to be. Nothing is better in a bowl of steamed green beans or sweet peas than butter, salt and pepper.
