Spray Sunscreen

Love it. Love the convenience, the coverage, the relatively non-greasy feel. However...

We just returned from the beach and I have to say something. Folks, before you spray this on yourself or your kiddos, could ya simply take a quick look around you to be sure that the overspray doesn't land on the people/belongings around you? Please?

I took in a few mouthfuls of spray thanks to people that were unaware as well as a moderate wind blowing my way. My water bottle tasted like sunscreen, too. Eeew.

Just a quick look around is all I'm asking... Thanks, mamas! Have a great summer!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Quick update- moving was not an option. We had paid alot for beach service and it actually sold out, so we were stuck in our chairs and yes, the beach was super crowded!

MzKitty, I'm glad you had "neighbors" that handled it well. That's the way to do it and we tried to be good sports, too. (Just got tired of it after seven days!)

Sunscreen is supposed to be applied before going out so that it has a chance to absorb into the skin. I hope people were just re-applying. :)

your beach must be very crowded. we just got back from puerto vallarta and i noticed our spray was blowing over to the people next to us (we were on lounge chairs by the pool so they were very close) but the man was very nice and just said, if i want to get it on him, to get closer so i get him covered. lol! so you didn't ask a question so there's nothing to answer except maybe move away from people next time so it isn't an issue.

Let them spray it on the inside, before, they come to the pool area. Also, you can spray it on paper towels and let them put it in a ziploc. When they need it, just reach for it and dispose. That way it won't fly around and they can keep applying it when needed. Everybody will be HAPPY!!! : )

Yep, that's why I spray my kids in my own backyard before we leave the house. Once we're in public, it's back to the bottle stuff. Also, slightly same topic, when you're at the beach and about to leave, please don't fling out your sandy beach towel and spray me with a shower of sand. I do understand not wanting to take home sandy towels, but please be aware of the people around you. And also, please remind your children, who are running around the beach (which is a lovely thing), to NOT step on strangers towels and leave their sandy footprints all over them. If beach towels are carefully laid on the sand, please remind them to run *around* them, not right *through* them (better yet, run around by the water's edge or your *own* family's "space"). Thank you.

Moms need to relize too that if the breeze is blowing, it's not only landing on other people's belongings - -it's NOT landing fully on their children. I've had friends whose kids got sunburn because the spray stuff must have been mostly lost in the wind!!!!

Amen Sister! Some lady at Sea World sprayed it all over my sunglasses last Sunday...not sure any of it actually landed on her kid. My shades are still greasy and smell like Baby Coppertone!

I just read this on Yahoo's Shine site. Spray sunscreen isn't good for you to breathe in. http://shine.yahoo.com/event/momentsofmotherhood/sunscree...
I switched back to the lotion that they recommended. The phrase that caught my eye was "potential hormone disrupter". I choose organic foods and lotions so as not to add to the environmental exposure of hormonal changes for my daughters and to find out that sunscreen might also be a culprit made me change my brand. Nutrogena and Aveeno are on the list of sunscreens to avoid. So even though I didn't address your post directly, if people stopped using the spray it would eliminate putting this into the air to breathe. By the way, we used to hold up a towel around the kid I was spraying if people were around when we used spray.
Have a safe summer!

Yes. I usually use the lotion/cream at home before we leave, and then use the spray after we've been there for an hour or so (it does wear off and lose effectiveness after a time--even if it says 80 SPF and needs reapplying). I try to be conscious of which way the wind is blowing--though my husband does not. LOL The way I figure it is this: My kid must be downwind from me to spray on them, so I MUST be able to see what is downwind from THEM. So whomever is spraying ought to be able to see if someone else is in the "spray zone". If they are, you move a few steps so they are not --or go down by the water where you tend to have more space...

I get annoyed because my hubby wants to use the spray at home, when it is ideal for use after you're already sandy and don't want to rub the sand and grit while applying the sunscreen. And the spray kind is spendy compared to the lotions, too.
Thanks for the reminder though! I try to always remind my kids about the towels and picking up boogie boards that have been tossed into the sand as well. Sometimes those wrist straps get covered in sand and then flap around as they are walking... ugh!
