Sprained Tongue?

Is it possible to sprain your tongue? I've been having some horrid coughing fits, some lasting up to 20 minutes for the last 4 days. I'm sure it's just the crappy cold that everyone has, so I haven't been to the doctor. The last few days my tongue has been really sore. It's the part in the back that connects to the throat. My tongue feels swollen and it's extremely painful to swallow. I've been keeping a very close eye on the back of my throat and I'm almost certain it's not my throat that hurts. The pain is most definitely more concentrated toward the tongue area. There are no lesions on my throat. The only conclusion that I've come with is that while having once of the massive coughing fits, I've strained or sprained my tongue. Is that even possible?

What can I do next?

LOL! I'm sorry your tongue hurts, but that's a great post. Sometimes my tongue hurts when I'm sick or getting sick. Lymph nodes, etc.

Go visit the doctor and have them take a look. Could be strep. If you still have your tonsils could be they are infected. Could even be an ear infection where the pain travels towards the throat, I have had that. The lengthy coughing fits alone would in my opinion warrant a doctor to take a look.

The swollen tongue concerns me. I've never heard of such an injury, but if your tongue swells too much, it can affect your air supply. It warrants a trip to the doctor, ASAP.

Well you definitely didn't 'sprain' your tongue. You sprain ligaments and you strain muscles. The tongue is a muscle.

You should definitely go to the doctor though. If you're multi-symptomatic with the coughing, sore and swollen tongue, and this has been going on for a few days it definitely warrants examination by your doctor.

Good luck and hope you feel better!

Of course you can sprain your tongue. It's a muscle and any muscle can be sprained. There's nothing you can put on your tongue however you can gargle a solution of warm water with a little tea tree oil. If you gargle it and hold it on your tongue, it will penetrate/absorb into the tissue and will heal. It's not going to taste good.....lol.....but it will work.

You might have ulcers on your tongue--way in the back. Try gargling with salt water and peroxide.

Hi, I hope you're feeling better by now (I realize this post is a few years old). Did you ever find an answer to your tongue pain? I'm currently experiencing the same pain as you described. I was recently at the dentist and am wondering if I strained my tongue trying to keep it out of the way, or possibly just tightened up all the muscles? It feels just as you described. It almost feels like a sore throat when I swallow but I'm pretty sure it's not because if I touch under my chin and press where the very back of tongue is it literally feels like a pulled muscle would. Also if I keep my finger on that spot under my chin and apply a tiny bit of pressure, the pain when swallowing is gone. Very bizarre!
