i have a 4 & 6 yo. I haven't put them in anything yet because i want to make sure that they are going to like what they get into. i don't want to spend the money on registration, and everything that goes with it if they aren't going to like it or show interest in it. the only way to know though if they DO like a sport is to put them in each one until they know that they do like it. so instead of breaking the bank (we're a one income family) i'm going to wait until mine are older and then they can decide what they want to do. right now mine say they don't want to do any of that stuff. i take them outside and kick around a ball and they play on the swingset and ride their bikes and play in the bounce house so they get a lot of exercise.

edited: if you do want to put them in something now check out your county website a lot of times they have cheap sports that kids can play thru them.

Maria, money was definitely an issue when my 2 were that age, and here is what I learned from those ages anyway. We've got the weather for it: get those kids to the park! Everyday! They are just learning about jumping, climbing, swinging, using their bodies and developing coordination that will be useful when they are ready for "real" sports! Plus they (and you!) will be learning about their individual strengths and particular physical talents that will enable you to choose which sports to gravitate towards when the time is right, because believe me, ALL sports involve an expense these days....NOTHING is free or even cheap. There will be false starts anyway with kids, i.e. they will start something then decide they don't want to do it anymore, but this plan of action might cut back on unnecessary costs of sports they really have no propensity for. PLUS!!! the greatest thing is to instill in them, by your good example, a love of being active, which will lead to a LIFETIME of physical fitness and good health! So get out there and have some fun!

Sometimes after school programs have good rates. Otherwise, check your local YMCA. They offer great programs at reasonable prices. Or your local recreational center. Another option is to get a few kids from your neighborhood together to practice a sport like basketball or soccer and have the dads take turns coaching in your community center or near by park. Some communities already do this. Remember to ask for sibling discount, offer volunteer hours that can be bartered or help minimize cost or help supply the program's needs (marketing, snack times, uniforms, etc.) An eager mom who is willing to help anyway they can, is always welcome.

hmm, the 4 is ready for soccer or tball. If you cannot afford your local ymca or rotary club then I suggest you just either get a small tball set or a soccer ball take them to the park and play with them.
