Sports Bra Under Bathingsuit for HS Swimming

My daughter is in PE swiming in HS. Many of the girls are wearing sports bras under the suits. Everybody is wearing one piece suits swim team type suits. Why the bra? According to my daughter none of these kids is especially busty - in fact most are really thin. Is this a mid-west regional style? We're from the California. Just curious.

What can I do next?

I wonder if it is to help cover up the nipple area?

Think "Wet t-shirt" contest....... as they swim, the nipples may get more "perky", and if there is no padding as from a standard swim-suit cup, it is very obvious....... the sports bra might help disguise that perkiness....

That is just weird. I have never heard of such a thing.

What is the point of the athletic bra under the suit? So nipples don't show?

These girls are HS and if they are that uptight about their bodies something is bad wrong.

We wore double swim suits during practices for the added drag and it was horribly uncomfortable. The suits should be fitted, bordering on too tight. The sports bra thing is new to me, though. Maybe the same principle. At any rate a well fitting suit should handle an ample bust. The whole hard nipple thing...shrug...get over is what we would have been told. It is sports not stripping or pole dancing.

When I was a swimmer, we used to wear 2 suits, one layered over the other, for drag. Basically it just makes you work harder during practice. Then, during a swim meet, you only wear one suit, and you go a little faster because you're used to dragging extra fabric through the water.

I have never heard of wearing underwear of any kind with a swim suit. Sounds highly uncomfortable.

Probably just some girls that feel self conscious about their bodies. A sports bra can hold together a more busty girl...or it can be a padded sports bra and give a flat girl some more up top.

I live in California...we are in swimsuits all summer long. Over the years I have only seen one girl wear a sports bra underneath. She is uber self conscious of her body. Hopefully with maturity she will relax and actually enjoy herself in the sunshine and water.

Unless they are wearing a white suit, I don't see the point...in which case, I would refuse white.

I have never heard of it here.

I used to do it, partly cause I have always been more endowed, and partly to ensure that my nipples didn't show after being in the water.

It's probably for modesty and nothing else. Sounds uncomfortable.

I think it may be to keep the nipples from showing in cold water, or to provide extra support. Probably a fad that got started for no reason, and everyone's copying it. I think it's got to be way too uncomfortable with wet material against the body for a longer time. You also see a "layered" look in a lot of gyms, with sports bras showing underneath tank tops or other tops - so it may have spilled over to the pool.

This isn't a mid-western style. I've never heard of wearing a sports bra under a suit!

Seems pretty redundant to me. If you're wearing the right, well fitting suit, you shouldn't need anything under it. An athletic style suit should have a built in sports bra style liner, and should be every bit as tight as a sports bray and have a criss-cross back so no risk of spilling out or anything so I have no clue...

Maybe it's to avoid having their bare chests showing when they change into and out of their suits in the locker room???

Who can say?

I only find it non-weird because my high school had uniform swimsuits AND we were required to still wear underwear and bras underneath.

Vigorous movement could expose even the smallest breast so I imagine the sports bra is to protect their modesty when coming out of the water.
