Hi! I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of/experienced a "split heartbeat"? Our pediatrician recently referred us to a pediatric cardiologist because she said she thinks she hears a split heartbeat in our 3 year old. She told me not to be alarmed at all, that it can be quite common, that she hears them, and typically it's normal, just something that needs to be monitored but of course as a mom, I want to get all the information I can. Thank you!

I have not heard of that but just wanted to mention my daughter was born with a heart condition. It would go from a normal rate up to 280 and back again, like her heart was confused. Common in older folks, not so much newborns. I didn't see her until she was 2 days old. It was VERY scary. Ends up they put her on adult meds for 6 months and it worked and hasn't had a problem since. She's 15 now.

So just go get it looked at. Good thing the doc caught it and you can address it. I hope everything works out. Good luck.

Is that different than a heart murmur?

I've heard of that.

Never heard of a split though.

I hope you can hear from other sources that it isn't troublesome.

I've not heard of a split hearbeat. I googled it and found information on Wikipedia for a split heartbeat T'S 2. There are several different kinds of splits. Google also listed an answer available on Yahoo! Answers. The answers say it's a condition is caused by the valves not firing in the correct order or one not opening enough causing an arrhythmia. I understand this is treated with medication. It is suggested that some children outgrow the condition. What sort of split is diagnosed with a EKG.

Other articles were listed when I googled.
