Is a boiled needle and tweezers still the best way to deal with a splinter? Is there a better way?

p.s. the splinter is out. Son is recovered. Me? Not so much!

What can I do next?

I like to try using tape first. :)
You know, just dry the skin really well, apply strong adhesive tape and pull it off. Sometimes it will catch the edge of the splinter and pull it out.

I also have read that soaking the afflicted area in warm water can help, too. The splinter itself (wood?) will absorb moisture from the water expanding it, and that can sometimes cause it to protrude enough to grab the end of it.

I hate splinters.

Yes, but when I get them, I tend to wait until they get a little infected and then you can squeeze it and it pops out...lol...I know, totally gross but easy and painless!!!

Yes, but when he was really little and freaked out about it, we would either soak in warm water to make it easy to come out or we would put an ice cube on it so he would not feel me poking at him. Both worked well. It just depended on his mood at the time. I feel for you!

This is one of those crazy but works things.

Put a piece of tomato on a splinter -- wrap with gause (sp) and tape leave overnight. In the morning the splinter will be gone. The acid in the tomato pops out the splinter. Even works with glass splinters.

I see you got the splinter out, but I thought I'd offer a tip! I use preparation H. Seriously! My Dr. told me about it. You put on preparation h, leave it for 30 minutes - 1 hour, and it should come out easily with tweezers.
