Spitting Up - Poughkeepsie,NY

Hi...My daughter is now just about 4 months old and even though it hasn't gone on for very long I'm a little worried and today is Sunday so I can't call the pediatrician, so here I am asking all of you for your opinion.

After every single feeding she has spit up alot, and not right away either. She usually spits up after about an hour or so. She'll be sitting in my lap smiling and even giggling and the she'll stop long enough to spit up (all over both of us, twice today we've had to change our clothes!) And then she'll go right back to smiling and giggling, like it didn't even phase her.

I'm just worried because at her last Dr's visit she hadn't gained that much weight since the previous visit and the doc was a little concerned. (7 ounces.) Otherwise she is great!

She is eating Similac Isomil Advance Soy Formula. She used to eat the regular but started spitting up alot and so we switched to soy...and it's been good for a couple of months now, but I know that a baby can become allergic to her food at any given time. I do what is recommended in the baby's first year book....to keep her upright after a feeding for atleast 30 minutes. No bouncing...(although every now and then she starts to giggle.) I burp her often, she makes daddy proud with her "trucker like" burps, (no offense to the "truckers"...lol) and I even fed her less more often. Has this happened to anyone? Any suggestions as to what else I can do to help avoid all the spitting up? (Is that even possible...)

Thanks much!

So What Happened?

Hi everyone! Thanks for all the great advise. We did end up giving her allementum and woo-hoo....it's working! She's keeping all of it down. (Figures right? Cause it's so damn expensive but hey what are you gonna do....it's the best for her right now.)

Thanks again!!

Hi Jeanmarie...
You may want to ask the dr. about switching your baby over to Similac Alimentum. It's a hypoallergenic formula ... it's for food allergies and colic due to protein sensitivity. The switched my triplets from the reg. Similac to this when 2 of the 3 were dealing with reflux, discomfort following feeding, etc, early on (but no vommitting, though). My nephew did experience the vommitting like your baby and they put him on the Alimentum or Nutramigen-- I think they are both the same-- just 1 is by Similac & 1 is by Enfamil. They are both pricey, but worth it if it makes them comfortable. :) There are a couple of other Similac kinds, as well, that may work out better for your baby. Check out this link-- it will tell you about each of the different varieties--> http://welcomeaddition.com/productinfo.aspx

I also use the Dr. Brown bottles, too, and they seem to help with the gas and digestion. Also-- when my babies were in the NICU, they recommended that you lay your baby on their belly at least 1 time a day for a pd. of time (i.e. during an attended nap) because this helps to aid in digestion.

Good luck and take care!

the same exact thing happened to my son, he was on regular enfimil, then went to soy for a few months and was still spitting up then we switched to alimentum and that really help. it turned out he had reflux and they gave him prevacid which seamed to help but then, after awhile on alimentum it started up again. so we sent him to a GI specialist at MGH and it turned out he was allergic to milk, eggs, soy, rice, potatoes, wheat, chicken, pork and beef. so all a long I was told by the ped to add rice to his bottle to thicken it up to help with the spitting. So now, the GI put him Neocate and he hasnt spit up, his eczema has cleared up, he isnt fussy anymore he is a totally different baby. so. My insurance paid for the Alimentum you should try that it is 80% hypoallergenic, and I had BCBS so maybe your insurance will pay for it too. hopefully that works for you, if you switch formula again and the baby still is spitting you should see a GI Doc too. good luck. Oh I forgot to mention, my son wasnt gaining enough weight he has been in the 2-3 percentile for his age, now he has been gaining weight so just to let you know dont wait like I did. thinking that it would pass cuz it didnt. but now that I am seeing specialist it has helped. so good luck again.

Hi Jeanmarie,

My Name is R., I have a son that is 2 1/2 y/o. When he was only 1 month old we were having the same problem, where he was spitting up after every feeding!! The doctor told me to try to start cereal in his milk for a while to see if it would slow down. If it didn't he would have to put Krystian on meds!! I didn't like the sound of putting an infant on meds. SO I tried the cereal thing... it worked like a charm!! I would suggest trying that before putting your baby on any meds! I would always put a scoop (of cereal) to every 2 scoops of Formula! Let me know if this works!! I hope I was of some help to you!! Good Luck!

Hi Jeanmarie.
Both of my boys (4 yrs & 11 mos) were big spitter uppers :)
They both ate a lot and spit up a lot and we were constantly changing bibs and clothes. They were also big and always gained weight. Some babies just spit up a lot.
Your doc will probably be keeping an eye on the weight issue...well, now it's Monday, so you can always call and see what they say in regards to that.
Hope all is well. Great to read that you're loving life!! :) God bless you and your family.

We had the same problem, turned out he had acid reflux. He was on Zantac for 2 months and things seemed to get better. He also went back to the regular enfamil after a little while too because he refused to eat the soy formula. The doctor said that because he was developing a taste for foods that he might just not like the taste of the soy formula anymore. We till have times when he spits up a lot but no where near as often as he used too.

Hi My name is T. and I have a 8 month old baby Girl. She had the same problem when she was around 3-4 mos old we tried everything. She was on 4 different formulas until my doctor told me to try Nutramigen, it's very expensive but that's the only formula that would work for her. Its for hypoallergentic infants that can't tolerate any other formulas. She has been on it for about 4 mos and she is doing very well with it. Just a thought talk with your doctor about this formula and see what he has to say about it.

Hi i also have a "spitter" HE is almost six months and for the most part it has slowed down considerably but he still is always spitting up. Unfortunately he does have reflux, we had a bout, when he was about 2 months, of inconsolable crying that we traced back to even very small amounts of caffine in my breats milk (yes ladies i have been 4 months with no chocloate!) the stronger he gets, being able to sit up more, the better it gets, so all you can really do is wait...according to my pediatrician. When i am working he does also get soy formula. and there were a couple times were he also went for a month or more not gaining any weight at all. but then he always made up for it in short oreder by gaining a pound a week. i probably havnet offered any advice, we too have tried all the recomended solutions and nothing has worked, so we are just playing the waiting game while his espoghus finishes growing enough to perhaps hold food down. if you havent discussed reflux with your dr, maybe you should, does she ever have a wheezing in her chest, that was also one of our big clues. hope i helped a litttle to at least let you now, that there are others struggling with the same problem, and our son is happy and thriving.

I had the same problem with my daughter. She spit up until almost 1. After every meal. The doctor said that it was just reflux and unless she seemed bothered by it to leave it alone and it will just go away on it's own. It eventually did, unfortunately during that time you will do a lot of laundry. Try putting cereal in to make it thick almost like a shake, you might have to cut the nipple a little so it will come out. Also I tried every formula even soy which made it quite worse, when I started using the Nestle Good Start it really helped. She became less gassy so the spitting up eased up. I don't know which kind of bottles you use but Iswitched to the Dr. Browns also and it seemed to help somewhat. Good luck.

Hi when my son was a baby we had this problem as soon as i switched from nursing to formula, It turned out that he had acid reflux, You might want to ask your doctor about it there is a simple procedure to check it out it is called a barium swallow, the drink this mixture out of a bottle and watch it on a camera, you get to be there the whole time and watch the proceedure, it take all of 5 minutes. It is worth looking into.

sounds like reflux.. ask your ped about using some meds like a gas reducer or something. sounds like you are doing the right things though. Both my kids had it and it will go away for the most part once your child learns to sit up alone. Try bumping one side of her crib up a little too, that may help at night. burping is good!! let her burp those big obnoxious burps!!!

I know that even now at times my 11 month old daughter spits up a bit after giggling, I think it's just the forceful nature in the way she laughs, because at first I thought it could've been too much to eat or food allergies but I've noticed that when she laughs a lot, even if it's an hour after eating, she will sometimes spit up.

Hope things work out for your little one!

My younger sister (also a first time mom) has been having the same problem with her 2 month old son. I suggested to her that maybe she should try the soy formula, which you have already done. This may be a problem with acid reflux, not a sensitivity to the formula. At least that was the thought my nephew's pediatrician had.
I think they put him on an acid reducer to see how that worked, but he's only been on it since Thursday, and I'm not sure how it's working.
Maybe you should make a separate visit to the pedi. and ask if this could be the same problem. It couldn't hurt, and maybe they can investigate the issue more thoroughly.
Good luck with everything!

the same thing happened with my daughter. she started spitting up constantly..my doctor says this is normal and she will spit up until she is between 9-11 months. it does get messy. we have to change clothes everyday on e and her as well. now she is almost 8 months!! the doctor put her on zantac because she believes it is acid reflux. maybe you should ask your doctor about that. even though i give her the zantac, she spits up still but its not like it was when she was 4 mos

hi jeanmarie
my daughter is 6 months and is a "puker." (that's what we call her at least!) she is constantly spitting up copious amounts, we have to change her (and ourselves) at least 2 times a day, often more, as well as sheets, etc. i asked my pedi about it and she suggested not doing three meals and a snack (like we were) but giving ella small frequent meals. it seems to have made a little difference. we also use the dr. brown's bottles which seem to help, and i know in our situation, when ella sits up and leans forward, that contributes. i guess i don't have a lot of good advice here, but i wanted to commiserate!! she doesn't have reflux, she just doesn't keep a lot of food down very well! i hope things get better.

My son is 6 months old and he also has reflux. He started to be a spitter around 3 months accompanied with the crankiness. You should definently talk to the doctor because if it is not reflux, it could be pyloric stenosis. (which is easily ruled out by an ultrasound..my son was checked for that) Reflux is manageable..my son still has been spitting up (luckily it seems to be slowing down now, as he is becoming more active) but he takes prescription Pepcid to control his tummy pains and it works wonderfully! Good luck!
