how do I get my 2 year old to stop spiiting. He will do it for no reason. I tried soap, but it only makes him spit more
Take him to a dentist to see if anything is wrong in his mouth. Also children who have a very keen sense of smell often feel that the unpleasant smell go into their mouth.
One effective way of stopping behavior is to completely ignore it. I learned this from a workshop taught by Foster Cline of Love and Logic. My grandson, when he was 6 or 7, tried spitting but after a couple of weeks he quit. It didn't get him the attention he wanted. It was no fun to spit and then not have anyone notice it.
At 2, he's learning about how the world works. He's discovered how to spit and will be practicing it for a bit. He'll figure it out and lose interest. I suggest that ignoring it will make it go away faster than any sort of discipline.
No wonder soap caused him to spit more. It leaves a really yucky taste in the mouth.
no one has mentioned time outs? work for everything. not sure what "tried soap" means but if you're putting it in his mouth you're punishing him, not discplining him. big difference.
my son is 3 1/2, and we are working through this same issue. we tell him that he can only spit in the sink, so send him (without making a big deal of it) to the bathroom if he wants to spit. we are hoping that in time (we have been doing this for about a week) he will loose interest.
What about allowing him to spit in the trash can only?
We didn't have a spitting issue but a biting issue...we took away favorite toys. with our daughter it was her baby dolls at 2 years old...we sat them in eye sight but not reach...and the biting stopped very quickly.
I ditto Aunt Mel Mel, take away his favorite toys when it happens, put them within eyesight and out of reach. At 2 he is old enough to make the connection of his behavior and the consequences.
My daughter went thru a spitting faze around that same age. She would spit on the chair just to look at it. Argh! I started making her clean up her spit every time. I made it a big production....she had to go get a towel and 'cleaner' (just a spray bottle with water) and clean it up. She got tired of it after a while and stopped spitting on stuff.
Stop giving him drinks soon he will not have anymore ammo.
