Spit-up but Not Really Spit-up?

I have a 7 1/2 week old who after about 30 minutes to an hour starts to spitup, after her bottle. The only thing is its not formula she's spitting up. She starts to make a gaspy noise and spits what is mainly watery (clear) and maybe a little residue of her formula. Is she too young to start teething? It seems like its drool half the time and I don't know if its just too much water in her formula (supposed to be 1 scoop per 2oz of water which I am doing) or if I need to mix in something to thicken it. Has anyone else had this problem?

What can I do next?

Hi T....Ok so you are probably going to get mixed answers about this, but, both my kids had slight reflux and my Ped. told me to add cereal to their bottles. 1 tsp per every 4 oz. of formula. Just don't forget to make the nipple whole a little bigger by cutting a small X, just a little, or she won't get anything out at all. Nothing worse than a baby sucking and sucking and getting nothing out. :-)

Also, I added a drop of baby gas drops (I used target brand) to every bottle as well. As a tip, if she seems to have trouble with the rice cereal and constipation, try the oatmeal instead or alternate. Both have the same effect with the reflux, just one will come out the other end quicker than the other. :-)

All of this will be better in just a few months by the way. They go through some strange stuff when they are so little and by the time they hit 9 months, they change dramatically. So don't worry too much. If she seems to be sick then just go to the DR. My Dr. was right on the money and I never had to get any prescriptions or anything of that sort so maybe your little one will be easy to fix as well! Good luck!

One of my twin sons would do the same type of spit up I breast feed for the first 5 months and then switched to formula and he would spit up like crazy and it was mostly liquidy water with a little bit of milk color to it our ped. seen it and said it was a perfectly healthy spit up he also had reflux too which it not show up till I switched him to formula. It could be what type of formula too b/c I know Enfamil is a thinner formula and when spit up its not as milky looking. All and all my spit up problem kind of stoped when I switched my son to a Hypoallgenic formula(which is very expensive)even then it was watery the best advice I could give is talk to your doctor and talk about different formulas if you are really concern, but most likely if he's gaining weight and not actting sickly he good but I know how the first time Mom worries areand good luck to you I wish my boys were that little again they just turned 1 the 15th

T.....You maybe just Bluffed yourself!
UR little Princess may very well be Teething....my daughter teethed that young and had 2 teeth at 2 months!!!!
i thought i was gonna croak LOL she bit me and that was all it took to be careful nursing her! as much as i think this is FUNNY now it really wasn't then but they do start that young and even younger...my niece was BORN with a Tooth LOL they had to remove it but yes indeed BORN with one in her little mouth. Sister was SHOCKED but confused being this was her 3rd child and never seen this type of thing before. Comfort her as much as possible and be sure to encourage her to bite on teethers, being she is so young you don't necessarily have to freeze them just put them in the refrigerator and she'll do just fine!
Congrats and many more happy times.

HI T., my son (who is now 3) was a CHRONIC spitter-upper and it really worried me that he was not getting enough nutrition until I talked to my pediatrician. He explained that even though it may look like alot, it's probably not as much as you think and that he may be experiencing a bit of reflux but wanted me to try switching formulas first. My son was originally using Enfamil and we switched the Enfamil A.R. which has added rice starch to help the formula "stick", if you will. Well let me tell you what a HUGE difference it made in all of our lives. His spitup decreased dramatically he never had to go on reflux meds. Just a suggestion, anxious to hear how your daughter is doing..

OK, how much is it?? is it just a tiny bit?? Does she seem to have trouble breathing while she spits up? at 7 1/2 wks she is a bit young for teething. the youngest they start erupting teeth is 3 months of age. So you got a bit longer to go. She may just be a big drooler. I wouldn't personally add anything to her bottle, and always mix the formula excactly to package instructions. ARe you giving her a water bottle at all. If so, then i'd say stop the water bottles as well for a bit. Babies that age dont' really need and extra plain water bottle, nor do they need anything otehr than formula or breastmilk in the bottle. No cereal or anything else unless ordered by her ped. It is something that if you are worried about it, i urge you to discuss with your ped. She could have a mild case of reflux.

Hello T.,
Most babies spit up at leat occasionally; some spit up with every feeding. The progress in newborns may be related to an immature sphincer beteween the sophagus and the stomach and to excess mucus that needs to be cleared. In older babies, spitting up occurs when milk is mixed with air is regurgitated with burp. Sometimes a baby wisely spits up because she's eaten to much.

You never really know! I had a problem with my son doing this to. The doctor told me to thicken the formula a little. Adding another half scoop won't hurt in any way, unless you have a overweight baby. He said the only thing you need to remember is that you are adding extra calories. I did this his whole first year with no problem and it did help with the spit up. Hope you can solve the problem!! I would try this before switching around formulas and I would never recommend rice cereal either! A lot of people will as your child get into the 3-4 month range, but don't do it. Slightly thickened formula will help and it won't constipate like the cereal will.

if its just a little bit of spitup...i wouldn't worry...if it seems excessive, and it happens multiple times after each feeding, you may want to talk to the ped about it....and consider switching formula. i babysit a little girl during the day, who spit up quite a bit after every bottle...and this was after she had started solids...her parents finally switched her to soy formula (a little more expensive i think?) and she hasn't had a problem since then. so it may be something as simple as that. and don't worry...the pitup sounds completely normal, given that its not happening immediately after the bottle...good luck!
