Spirit Airlines

I try to get to Florida quite often to visit my kids and the airfares keep going up! I keep seeing ads for Spirit Airlines with lower fares, but you have to "join their club" I heard some bad publicity earlier this year about canceling a fare for a retired vet. What has been your experience with booking a fare and traveling on Spirit airlines? Should I consider this or stick with the higher fares on other airlines. I am much closer to DFW than to Love Field for Southwest Airlines.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the travel tips. It looks like Spirit would be a big hassle, so I will try to find some deals elsewhere.

I am a Travel Agent and I am flying Spirit in 2 weeks to Las Vegas. They are cheaper but you have to weigh the cost of their baggage fees with the other airlines. Southwest for some reason has been higher than American lately. Remember to always book air on Tuesdays or Wednesdays and never over the weekend to get the cheapest rate.

Thanks,

Flew them to Boston direct flight-they managed to lose my luggage-after filling out form they give you a number to check on line for update-their web site kept saying they have no record of the bag-phone number they provide is automated and tells you they don't want to hear from you till your bag is missing for 5 days. After two days of not hearing anything bag was dropped on the front step, the web site never did have any record of my bag. Plane was old, dirty, leather seats were cracked and the bottom of some of the seats were missing. Never again-also they only allow 40#s instead of 50#s as most airlines.

We are Southwest fans. I book travel weekly for hubby for our business and pleasure. If you have a date far enough in advance you can get a great deal that might make it worth your while to go to Love Field. We pay $10 for parking in the garage per day.

We are less than 1 hr from both Love Field and DFW. I think the parking for DFW just went up to $18 per day. We do however park in the terminal, covered area and not offsite.

I fly hubby to Houston monthly for less than $120 on Southwest.

That said, sometimes American has some very competitive deals. I had a last minute flight for hubby and I went to my goto SWAir for a last minute ticket and it was just over $600 to AZ. I checked American and got a ticket for less than $350.

I work directly with the airline website and you can get good deals. You don't need agents anymore to book travel for you unless you are a newbie at doing it yourself or plan an ultra vacation somewhere with a true agent.

I've not seen many agencies around in a long time except for the MLM one that is out now with people signing up on that which is a crock.

My daughter used to fly through them as an unaccompanied minor from SC to MI and we never had a problem. Of course she never had lay overs but we never had booking or fare issues. That was also back before airlines started charging for every bag. She has flown through Delta and Air Tran most recently and never had and issue either. But what I do now is compare all the fees each airline charges for bags, changing flight days (just in case), the UM fee and then the air fare it's self. Some airlines charge for carry on bags too :( Most of the 'club' stuff with air lines is to earn points when you fly and sometimes they send you special fare emails that aren't really that special! lol

I've had a few friends fly with them and they were less than impressed. Customer service was not helpful. One person had a flight delayed 4-5 hours and they wouldn't book her through another airline. Eventually her flight got cancelled and she was stuck and ended up missing her weekend vacation.

Even though their fares are less they charge you for everything under the sun (even to carry on a bag i believe). My parents do fly them back and forth from FL with only a few instances but my sister has flown them twice and both times they canceled the flight back home (once from L.A. and once from FL). Literally just cancelled the flight and said have a nice day, we can rebook you on a flight in 3 days otherwise you need to make other arrangements. My sister thought the 1st time was a fluke but when it happened again she swore she'd never bother with Spirit again.
