I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but my MIL stores hers laying down in a drawer in alphabetical order. It seems to work for her, but that just doesn't appeal to me at all. I've had mine in a small cupboard next to and above the stove, but we've moved and my favorite thing ever has been the lazy susan in the corner cupboard of this house. But alas, we're moving in a few weeks and I don't konw what I'll do.
But one thing I know is that I will be sorting them according to what tastes good together. I have one section for garlic, garlic salt, onion powder, diced onions, seasoned salt, etc. I use those a lot in cooking. Another section is for cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, etc. I think of those as more of "baking" spices. The ginger's kind of a flip=flopper because I use it with garlic in sweet and sour sauce, but I think gingerbread men make me put it with cinnamon. Another section is for "Italian" spices like Oregano, Basil, Parsley, and Italian Seasoning.
My sections aren't separated or anything, the cooking is on the left and the baking on the right. My little-used spices, like cumin, sort themselves because they always end up at the back.
I guess I'm not the rigid kind of person who likes alphabetical things. I just like to grab what I need and put it back in the same general area.
