Speech Therapy in Kindergarten

Hello there,

Due to the schools in our area (Yonkers, NY). My husband and I are considering relocating our family to New Milford, CT in the next year or so (maybe sooner!). Our youngest son, who has a late November birthday, is currently receiving speech therapy in New York's Early Intervention Program. And since his birthday is so late, etc. etc.. I would like to hold him back a year before he enters kindergarten. Now, since a gigantic part of our move has to do with the schools, I have a question regarding what will happen to him when kindergarten rolls around.

So here's my question:

If we chose to enroll him a year later in kindergarten in New Milford or Brookfield (so that he turns 6 instead of 5 that November). Will he still be eligible for special services? I know the CT statute gives parents the option to wait a year (or two! wowzers!) to enroll their children, but I'm wondering how that impacts special services (like speech, etc.)..?

Can anyone help us out with this... We're truly in love with New Milford, but we want to cover all our bases. :-)

Thanks so much in advance!

C.

So What Happened?

Thank you both for your responses! I'll call the school district as suggested. I've just heard so many horror stories about Yonkers that I'm just a bit nervous!

Hi C.,

I don't know but I can't imagine that the school district would deny services based on age?? I would just call the school district to see what their policy is.

I can understand why you want to get out of Yonkers! Quite frankly, CT is much nicer that NY. And I love NY and grew up in the Hudson Valley. If you need any assistance in a home search and purchance please take a look at my husbands web site.

Before kindergarten your child can be evaluated by school personnel for any special needs. You holding him back a year should not affect any services at all. The school system in New Milford is very good. I have lived here in New Milford since 1987 and my children have both been through the school system here with good results. One is now in college and the youngest will graduate high school next year. I think you'll be pleased. Good luck with your move and welcome to town.

Hi C.,
I just wanted to add one more thing, not really about speech therapy but about the schools. I live in Danbury but I know that New Milford (like Danbury) only has 1/2 day kindergarten. Brookfield is a little different. They do 3 full days and 2 half days (or it may be 2 full/3 half). So look into that if you really want full days. Danbury has a lottery to get full day. Good luck!
