Special Feeding Needs

I have searched the internet to the end of my abilities and was hoping someone would be able to help me find a helpful website. My 1 year old has difficulty swallowing and does not do well with most the normal cups. We did find two that worked, but we can't find replacement parts for them, so I would like to find something else that would be cheaper to maintain. Specifically we used one as a loner that I have not been able to locate. I believe it would have been sold as a specialty, possibly through a catalog for special needs children. Does someone know how to locate things for special needs children. I have found the websites that talk about the diagnoses, but can't find the practical solutions. The main considerations we have are that the cup has to work with thickened liquids (almost as thick as honey) and they have to have a fairly slow flow rate. Thank you for your help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for your help. I kept at it and finally found the parts I needed were not available yet. Thanks for the encouragement. Since I was the first, I was able to let the feeding specialist know as well. It is so nice to know there are so many mom's with advice they're willing to share. I checked out many of the resources mentioned. Thanks again!

Hi K.,

I am a mother of a special needs child myself so I hope I can be of service.

I have a few website addresses you can try. Haven't looked at them in a while but they may have what you are looking for.

http://showeryourbaby.com/cotongo3.html

http://www.adaptivechild.com/special-needs-equipment.html (this one has feeding equipment located under adaptive equipment)

http://specialchildren.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?z...

This one is mostly toys and activities but since you didn't mention the diagnosis I thought I would include it for future reference,

Hope this helps.

Hello! I am a Special Education major at Metro so I know about some resources. Things like you are talking about are called adaptive and assistive technology so if google assistive technology a lot of different resources come up. Here is one website I found but I am not sure if it will help because I do not know specifically what you are looking for.

Good luck!

Hi,
here are my few suggestions, hope they can help. have you asked your pediatrician? Have you heard of Child Find? They are the team of specialists who work in the school districts with special needs kiddos, they are also often a first step in developmental evals? You can call the main number to your school district and get connected. What about an OT? Also, contact Developmental disabalities resource center (DDRC) in Lakewood. They too only work with individuals of all ages with disabalities (special needs). Internet search for reflux and special drinking cups. Hve you contacted the manufacture of the cups you like? What about European sippy cups? Possibly contacting an ENT... swallowing has something to do with throats. Good luck in your search. Child find and DDRC are both excellent resources, maybe they can give you other ideas.

if you have a cup that works and it has markings try googling any or all or the labels. It may take a while but I can usually find things I want that way.

I would call an occupational or physical therapy clinic and ask them where you could buy such products for your child. They should be a big help. Our occupational therapist was great and recommended different catalogs and sites with special equipment. They should also have their own catalogs from which they purchase such equipment as well.

Also call Children's Hospital. If I remember correctly they should have a feeding clinic that could help you as well.

Just some ideas and best of luck:)

Have you tried the YouCan Toocan store in Denver. They specialize in adaptive equipment for people with special needs. Also, has your doctor recommend any special therapies for you son? If so, an occupational therapist might have recommendations for a cup. Good luck to you all!
