Hello A.,
perhaps having sort of a family reunion and bringing your brother so he can be there would be a special birthday present and then you can get the family portrait done.
Good luck and have fun! ~C.~
Hello ladies!!! I am needing some advice. My moms 60th birthday is coming up at the end of this month, and I am wanting to get her something extra special for her birthday. I thought about a spa package, but she is not into that. And then I thought that it would be nice to have a nice family picture taken, seeing as thought we haven't had one done in YEARS and there have been additions since then, but my brother has moved and is not planning on coming home for a real long time, so thats out. Anyway what are some special gifts that you have given your parents at there milestone birthdays. I am at a total loss..Thanks for all your help...

you could try making a family picture and photoshopping in your brother?
My sisters, my husband, and I took my mom to a Tony Bennett concert for her 60th birthday. We all had a wonderful time. Perhaps there's a performer she'd like to see, or maybe she'd enjoy the symphony or a play.
Since you can’t get everyone in a photo together, a collage of recent pictures would be fun.
One of my family members recently invited her mom's friends and family to share written memories of her mom. She compiled photos, recipes, and sweet notes in a wonderful scrapbook in celebration of her mom’s 80th birthday.
You could put together a scrapbook of her life. From her parents wedding picture, baby pictures of her, ones of her growing up, getting married, having kids, becoming a grandma, etc. That would take a while and would require the help of her parents if they are still around or even snooping through her house to "borrow" some photo albums. Maybe an old family photo that can be restored if she has one. You could have home movies put on DVD for her. This past Christmas, my sisters and I got pictures of my parents younger days, us as kids and teens, through present day and the grandkids as babies to the age they are now. We put them all on a digital frame and set it to music. The frame was about $100, so we all went in on it together. They LOVED it!
Something not photo related - maybe buy her maid service for a time period. If she doesn't like the thought of strangers cleaning her house, maybe you could offer to be her maid once a month for a year. That wouldn't cost you anything but time, and I know as my parents have gotten older, housework is something they don't really have the energy for like they used to.
what about a mothers ring - include grandchildren too on it if a small family - that might be nice....costs are ~ $200 ish somewhere like what youd pay for a spa day- you could include brother in cost too....
