Speaking of Septic Tanks

I read a recent post about septic tanks and it got me to thinking. We are fairly new to country living. How often do you need to have your septic tank emptied? How do you know when it is time?

What can I do next?

It depends on the size of your tank. Typically every 3 years for an average home with a 1,000 gallon tank.
How long have you been in your home with a septic tank?
Do you have record of when it was last checked, if not, I would have it emptied/inspected.

We usually have ours done every 3 years. One thing to watch out for when selecting a company, is HOW they charge. There are many fly-by-night companies that charge by the pound. Sounds like a good deal until you realize that each gallon weighs a little over 8 lbs. I would talk to neighbors and get a recommendation from them.

I agree with the others. Just to let you know I also live in Texas, and I'm sure the cost varies some depending on the size of the tank and other variables, but it cost us $350. We have it emptied about every 3 years. This time our toilets started flushing very slowly. We've never noticed anything like this before. I guess we waited a little longer than usual to empty the tank this time. Enjoy country living!

Well, my parents just had theirs emptied after 5 years and were told that there wasn't much in there, they could have likely gone another 5 years or more.

We haven't had ours emptied and we've been there nearly 7 years, family of 6. I doubt the previous owner emptied it either because the house was only 2 years old.

We were told every 3-5 years. You'll notice that your toilet will be slow to flush and your drains will be slow to drain. If you just moved in and don't have any record of the last time it was emptied, I would have it done. You'll need to know where your septic tank cover is located. It shouldn't take very long or cost very much money to have it taken care of.
