Hola Moms!
I am looking to start a spanish playgroup in my home and possibly rotate locations with other moms. I have a four year old son and a 2 month old daughter with whom I speak spanish to daily. Although my son understands everything I say (in spanish)he refuses to speak it which is why I would like to start such a playgroup. I am thinking once or twice a week for newborns through pre-k. I live near the HIP in the NW side of Chicago. Please contact me if you're interested! ____@____.com

Hola Chella,

I have a 1 yr. old son that I speak only spanish too but daddy speaks to him in French and English (he's Haitian). Hoping he'll become tri-lingual and we won't confused the heck out of him! His babysitter is only Spanish speaking and I love that as she reinforces the language. I'd love to participate in the playgroup but I live in Arlington Heights. Not sure where the HIP is?

Hi C.:

I have two daughters, 1 and 2. They are like your son understand the language but answer in English. I currently work so I'm not sure if this might be something that may work around my schedule. I sure hope so. I also live near the HIP. Wait to hear from you.

I am interested, my husband speaks spanish to my son (5-yr old) and I speak English. But my son clearly prefers to speak English. I think because its a little bit easier and has a greater vocabulary in English. Either way, he needs to be in more situations than just at home with Daddy to speak it. I am a bit concerned as to how far you live from us.....What is HIP?

Hey,
FYI, there is a pretty active Spanish Immersion playgroup that meets at BeBy Baby the 1st Tuesday of the month @ 1:00-2:30, at Curio Cafe (Lawndale/Roscoe)the 3rd Wednesday of the month @10:00-12:30, and at the Belmont/Lincoln Library the last Monday of the month @10:00-11:30. They also do an occasional get together on off weeks to local toddler friendly places. It's nice because not only do the kids get to play in a Spanish speaking environment, but they also do a Spanish book circle, Spanish song circle, and activities to tie it all together. One of the moms that organizes it is moving to the NW side so she's looking to find more NW locations to meet. You should check it out sometime!

I am soooo interested. I speak Spanglish to my kids and would love to expose them to other kids who speak Spanish. My 5 year old understands a lot and speaks a little. My 3 year old knows a lot of words but always answers in English. My 1 year old responds to a few words. Its nice to know I am not alone with finding it rather difficult to be consistent. thanks so much for your post.

Hi C.,

I am very interested. I actually had thought about sending out a request like yours months ago but I do not have the space in my very small apartment plus thought I may not get a single response. I am so glad to see yours. I have two boys 2 and 4. Both my husband and I speak Spanish to them although I must admit I am guilty to speak English to them about 85% of the time. I find it easier for me. My husband gets upset at me for doing so and I totally understand but my world is English, English, English and most of the time it's just instinct taking over. Although, last summer we spent a month in Mexico with my in-laws and my 4yr old, 3 then came back speaking so much Spanish it was amazing. After a few weeks in preschool he was back to his norm, speaking English to mostly everyone. Both my boys do speak some Spanish to my parents here but I want them to have more Spanish speaking around themas their norm. I know exactly where the HIP is and would love to participate in the playgroup.

I might be interested! I am also a CPS teacher and am not totally fluent. My son is 25 months old and has been going to a Spanish speaking daycare provider from an early age.

He gets mad at me when I speak Spanish, it's like his two worlds are colliding.

I live on the northside.

I am in Morton Grove, and would prefer to meet at a park to play during the summer. My sons are 1/2 Ecuadorian and 1/2 American(me) so they both speak (will speak, my younger boy is 1) fluent Spanish. My 5 year old speaks Spanish with his papi and English with me. (although I also speak fluent Spanish) E-mail me when you get something going, ____@____.com

I'm interested but am not sure about your location. Where's the HIP? I live in Rogers Park, have a 1 year old daughter that I speak both Spanish and English to. I'm Puerto Rican but married a non-Spanish speaking American, and am forgetting my own Spanish. I've hired a Spanish-only nanny for my 2 telework days every week to help both me and my daughter speak it more.

I would be very interested, i have a 2 1/2 yr old boy, that understands and speaks spanish, but answers in english unless i insist on him answering in spanish. My husband does not speak spanish, so it is kind of hard to "make" him speak spanish all the time. I live near Devon & Milwaukee.
