Sore Wrist

I was inquiring to know if other moms have experienced sore wrists after pregnancy? I have been nursing my son since birth and my wrists are sore, epecially my right one. My sister-n-law said she had the same issue after pregnancy, but it went away in a couple of months. In the beginning I figured it was due to cupping the newborn and my body was not use to that, but now five-going on six months later, it seems as if it is getting worse. Even sore to the touch. If you follow your thumb down, its that bone at your wrist. I would love to know if others have had this same issue. I guess I should invest in some wrist guards?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I've also been told that it is a gain glen...whatever that is. But I am calling a doctor today. Wish me luck ladies, hopes its nothing too serious.

I didn't have sore wrists, but my fingers get sore and cramp up. I have even seen an arthitis specialist and he couldn't find anything. He prescribed a muscle relaxer, which does not work. My son is 14 mths old and at times they still bother me. I hope you have better luck than me!

J.,
I had the same problem after my son was born. I waited it out thinking it would go away - drove me nuts! I finally went to an orthopedic surgeon sure that I had broken it or had contracted some horrible disease - it was tendonitis. Dr gave me a very painful shot right into the place where you are describing the pain and within a day I was painfree. I've had occasional twinges in it but they usually pass within a day.
Depending on whether you are breast feeding or not, you can take some advil (which will help some). Hope you feel better soon.

I didn't just have pains in my wrists. I had pains in various places when my 5 year old was a nursing infant. It lasted for months. One day it would be in my wrist or in my arm and then at other times in my leg. It was always my arms and legs though. The pain was down in the bone and sometimes unbearable. My husband would try rubbing my legs but that was excrutiating and I would cry like a baby. The only way I can describe it is that it was like I remember growing pains...but a whole lot worse. The doctor checked for blood clots but found nothing. They ran blood tests and all they could find was that my calcium levels were elevated but they didn't see how that would cause me pain. They were ready to start checking me for other things like fibro-myalgia. But when the baby was 5 months old, I got pregnant with my youngest and the pain almost completely dissipated. I still occasionally have one of those pains but nothing like before. The doctors suggested that it was hormone related.

Yes I have heard of pregnancy induced carpal syndrome. Wrist guards may help. you will probably need to be seen by a physcian though. Good Luck.

Yes, I had this so bad I had to go an see an Orthapedist and wear wrist braces and have therapy. But, just as my primary Dr had advised me, as soon as my son was crawling and not requiring me to pick him up all the time it went away. Also make sure you are using correcting lifting procedures, try not to twist you wrist while picking him up (I know that is impossible...I could not do the "correct lifting procedures" for long but when I was using them it helped.

I hate to say this, but it really sounds like carpel tunnel. If you wrap it things will get worse. My husband had surgery for his two years ago, and is doing fine. The first step you need to take is going to the doctor and getting it x-rayed. They will be able to tell you if that's what it really is, and the good news is if it hasn't progressed too much you could go through physical therapy. I know if it is that it is so painful, and I have seen many studies that say pregnant women get it more easily. I do hope it is something else, but the way you decribe it, I don't really know of anything else it could be.

J.... this same thing happened to me after the birth of my first child (June 2005). I was fortunate to have a friend that's an orthopedic surgeon be able to help soon after I started having the problem. He said I had tendonitis in my wrists, some from handling the baby, but mostly from hormones (I nursed my daughter for 14 months). My wrists got better eventually, but it did take months. You can buy wrist guards or supports at Walgreens and that helped me. It's so unfair to have to deal with sore wrists on top of everything else becoming a mother entails. But, like everything else, this too will pass. Hang in there!
