My son is 18 months old and has a rash that is flesh tone in color, only on stomach and back. it kinda feels like sandpaper, you can really only feel it if u rub his back or tummy, or sometimes can see if in the light. My husband and i cant figure it out, he is eating drinking and very much himself. anyone have a clue what it might be, we thought maybe dry skin but we put lotion on him every night after tub. He has had for about 2 1/2 months.

What can I do next?

Sounds more like eczema than a rash. The lotion may be making it worse! Get a tube of hydrocortizone cream and put that on him for a few days. If it goes away it's eczema and you should explore what in his diet might be causing it. Most the time it's dairy and/or wheat.
Stop bathing him every night, that also makes it worse because the water dried out his skin:( Unless he's getting dirty paying outside or something, twice a week is plenty. Follow with hydrocortizone cream.

sounds like maybe eczema.....regular lotion will not help. sometimes it can be caused by an allergy...or it just' is' . you can get a prescription cream i think....and there is things you can avoid to help keep it under control.

My son went through the same type of thing for over 6 months. It would come and go. The doctor would give us some sort of prescription cream, but it never completely took care of the rash and it would come back. After the first 2 months, I stopped putting the cream on my son. The rash did the same thing....come and go, show up in different places on different days. It never seemed to bother him so we let it run its course. As I said eventually (over 6 months) it finally went away.

Have you tried Renew body wash and lotion? It helps with most skin conditions and is safe for kids.

since its skin toned, it sounds like eczema to me. you could talk to an allergist or a dermetologist. for my kids, it was the hard water and the type of baby wash that I was using. We installed a water softner and switched to Aveeno Baby wash.

Definitely sounds like a mild form of eczema. I would start with changing your soap, lotion & detergent and if it doesn't improve with those steps then you might have to consider his diet.

I recommend Cetaphil soap & mosturizing cream (You can get a big tub of the cream at Sam's Club).
Make sure the detergent you use is Fragrance Free - All Free & Clear is a great one. Don't use Dreft - it actually has lots of fragrance!

I bath my son everyday, and it has not made his eczema worse.

My son had a few of those on his legs. I assumed it was just a little bit of eczema and just kept putting lotion on it. Try unscented aveeno baby lotion or aquaphor. It may be that the lotion that you use is irritating his skin. Did he start any new foods around that time you started noticing it? If so, maybe cut it out and see if it improves.

Hi E., You have some good answers. I hope to add another.
1. Wash with cetaphil. I found soaps can be drying.
2. what detergent and softener are you using? fragrance free?
3. i received a great cream from a european friend. ask the dr if they have it in the U.S. it is called "Bepantene" from Bayer. It helps with dryness, itching, redness, rashes etc. I use it on my LO from 3 months and it has solved all of his skin issues.

could be anything from measles to an allergy. Has your child been innoculated in the last week? Could be a reaction or even a mild dose of measles. Strept can cause a rash, or reaction to antibiotics.....on and on. I would call the nurse at your pediatricians office and describe to her over the phone. She/he can tell you whether you need to come in.

He may have eczema, my son has those same dry spots on his back and legs. The pediatrician prescribed a 1% hydrocortisone gel. The gel is clear and you only need to use a little. It seems to clear it up, but I notice that if I stop using it they come back. She also recommended that I use Dove moisturizing body wash to give his skin extra moisture, and don't bathe him every day, wash him up, bathe him every other day.

Hopefully that helps.
