Son Waking Too Early

Since we switched my son to a toddler bed, he has been waking up at 5am instead of 7:30. And he won't go back to sleep. What do we do to make him sleep longer? He's also not napping.

What can I do next?

We bought a cheap digital clock at Target and told my son that he could not get out of bed until the first number was "7". We put a picture of the number 7 above the clock in case he forgot what it looked like. It took about a week of walking him back to his room and showing him that the clock did not say 7 but after a week a he got it. At first he would just lay in his bed awake until 7 but now he actually sleeps until 7 or even past 7. Hope that helps!

How old is your son? He probably just needs to get used to the bed and is just happy he can get himself up now. It's also lighter earlier now so get a blackout curtain if you dont have one yet.

As a toddler, she just amused herself in her room with toys and books until the rest of us got up. Sometimes she would come into my room after a while. LOL... once she pulled my eyelids open. OH! That was startling! :-) But mostly she would just amuse herself. One nice thing about this is she became independent and confident about herself. Very early on she learned to get herself some breakfast in the morning. One day around age 3 I was so very very sick, vomiting, and she went downstairs and got herself a cup of milk. I thought "Oh No" - I imagined the whole carton spilled on the kitchen floor, but no - she'd actually done it just fine!

If my kids woke before 6 am, I just let them stay in their beds and they almost always fell back to sleep. Of course, a toddler bed is a different story. On days when my daughter (3) gets out of her bed that early, I just take her back in and tell her it's too early to be up and she goes back to sleep. On occasion, she is up for the day and can't go back to sleep so I just pull her into bed with me and she just lays there. I'm lucky though, she doesn't ever try to take advantage of the bed thing, in fact, she says she doesn't want to sleep in our bed. I'm sure the early wake ups and no napping have everything to do with the change of a new bed and some new freedom. I would just remain consistent with the bedtime and naptime routines and I'm sure it will fall back into place.

usually if my kids woke before I was ready to get up I would give them some toys to play with and a snack ( cereal and a sippy) and tell them to be quiet because it wasn't time for mommy to get up yet.

I don't really have an answer.....just sympathy. I'm in the same boat. My son wakes around 5 and doesn't go back to sleep. But....he does nap. The crazy thing is that he's exhausted by 9:30 so I normally put him down for his nap before 10 and he sleeps nicely for at least 2 hours. Then ge goes to bed at 7 and is ready and tired. Hang in there!! I pray that at least you get him to nap. You need that too.

Get a Good Night Lite (google online), it worked miracles for me! Its a moon light that turns to a sun when its time to get out of bed. My 2-1/2 yr old went from 5:30am to 7am, just make sure you do the 15 min increments as suggested.
