Hello mamas,
I am hoping that someone in the group has come across this in some form..... my son, who will be 2 years old next month, wakes up pretty much every night around 3 am coughing, gulping, gasping and hacking-- it lasts about 10 minutes straight. I have taken him to the doctor 3 times for this already and the dr. gave him Malox (he thought it was heatburn because of the gulping) but that did not make a difference. He rules out allergies otherwise he would do the coughing bit throught the day, which he does not-- only at 3 am and to a lesser extent around 6:30 (wake up time) but only slightly.
The dr said not to worry about it "he'll grow out of it" but I have never heard that routine coughing fits are part of the growing up process..... Does anyone have any suggestions? BTW this wakes him, me and daddy up at night. Then it usually takes my son 30 minutes to fall back asleep, so it is preventing him from getting proper rest.

What can I do next?

This could be from sleep apnea. I would bring him to an ENT for an evaluation. If he stops breathing during the night, he could be coughing and hacking as a result of trying to start breathing again. My son had his tonsils removed because of the same thing and the only time he coughs during the night now is when he is sick. Good luck.

I am not a doctor, but it sounds like possibly asthma to me. Here is a website which lists waking up at night with coughing fits but being fine during the day as a possible symptom:

Good luck!

I wonder if it might be post-nasal drip due to allergies? When you are lying down, it's easier for mucus to accumulate in the back of the throat, causing the coughing.

My son is having more problems w/ this (coughing and excessive clearing of his throat).

I give him Claritin for children; this helps a great deal. Check w/ your dr before giving any meds...
(PS His symptoms are mostly at night also)

Is it reflux? I don't really have a clue, but have you tried taking all allergens out of his room, such as stuffed animals, etc. How about keeping a humidifier on every night all night in his room?

Also, my son is the same age....I know I live in Wellington, which isn't that close but would love to get together with you some time!

There's a great homeopathic remedy that fits this symptom picture beautifully. See if you can find a local naturopathic physician (licensed) or homeopathic practitioner that can do a full work-up. You'd be surprised how nicely natural remedies can work! Knowing natural processes and how the body works when it's in balance is amazing science!

Hi T.,

You might want to have him checked for asthma as well. Hope he feels better soon so you can all get some much needed rest. Good luck!

I know it has been a long tome since you posted , but did you found a solution for the coughing , my daughter does the same thing every night religiously not matter if she goes to bed at 8pm or midnight I know that she will wake me up at 2:30 and again right before 6. O hope you still around and can help out it has become a schedule for me now, but I'm worried about here doing it at the same time every single nite and not being able to sleep good
Thank you sincerely
