Son's Stinky Feet

Mamas,
Please help. My son ends up with stinky feet whenever he wears his sandals. He does not get stinky feet if he wears socks and tennis shoes or his flip flops. I think it's the kind of plastic. The shoes are Reef Sand-Piper. (Mamasource pulled my first request because it contained the link to the shoes!)
How do I get rid of the cause of the stink on his sandals? Soak them in bleach? If so, please give me a recipe! :-) SIL says his feet smell like vinegar. Oh, he's 3 yrs old. So, it's not like he's a teenager with bad hygiene.
Thanks

So What Happened?

Here is the response from the manufacturer. I don't think I've ever seen antifungal cleaner though.

We would recommend cleaning the sandal with an antifungal cleaner or biological washing powder (earth friendly). The upper material used some Reef sandals is neoprene, the same material use for wetsuit. As this material is used for comfort, sometimes with the heat and friction it could attract odor from the foot. We recommend cleaning the sandal often and letting it air dry.

I have the same issue with my 3yr old son. I wash the shoes (even though you aren't supp to) and try to put odor eaters on every morning. It doesn't help 100% but it keeps me from being knocked over when he removes his shoes.

Well I'm familiar with this problem ") The only thing to do is keep him in real leather shoes or have him ALWAYS wear socks. As for getting the stink out you can try putting them in a zip lock baggie over night in the freezer. But it only seems to help for a short period of time.

Hello M.,

if you soak them in bleach then your son will absorb bleach through the bottom of his feet. how about pouring some baking soda on them overnight?
Good luck!

I had the same issue with my son's Stride Rite sandals (he is 3 as well). I soaked them in an Oxi Clean laundry booster solution for about an hour and then rinsed them really well. It worked great!

It could be the way the shoes are processed. Out here in California apparently there is a new law that shoemakers must adhere to regarding how they make their shoes. Because of California Prop 65 (you can google the information) shoes direct from the manufacturer must label their shoes if it contains 1 of the approximately 900 toxins that are known to be carcinogenic, cause birth defects and/or reproductive disorders. This law was made to help the CA's water sources be free of chemicals (after people throw their shoes away in the ocean somewhere). Born shoes, Report shoes have this problem. Some Tevas, and according to Shoebuy.com so are Croc shoes. You can call the manufacturer directly and speak with a manager because some of the line workers are unaware. I noticed with some shoes the feet smell worse...and this could be part of the reason why.

Don't soak the shoes in bleach. It could really irritate his skin. Throw the shoes out and soak your sons feet in baking soda. (let's hope the shoes weren't expensive) If so write a complaint and ask for a refund. Good luck.
