Does anyone know much about Sylvan Learning center? My 8 year old has been struggling a lot in math and reading comprehension and I think tyring to help him is beyond my capabilities. He looks at things very differently and has trouble organizing information whether it is a math problem or something he has read. I am not sure what to do and if Sylvan is a good option.

Sylvan only tutors. There are a lot of options that actually help as student learn better. Check out www.interactivemetronome.com for an example. My mom is a provider, if you want more information. The change in me and my son is amazing! I'm so glad we did it. We will be doing another session for my son to make the changes permanent, but oh my word! It is amazing! (Not all kids need two sessions, but my son was pretty severe.) He went from not being able to write a complete thought to writing complete, well-structured sentences in a matter of weeks.
One of my coworkers took her 9 year old there. It has been a godsend for them. He was having problems focusing and they have helped enormously. I think Sylvan is a great option. Best of luck!
I don't know what area you live in, but my mom tutors kids privately for just these issues. She is an amazing multi-sensory teacher (taught for 30 years). If you are in the Denver or Lakewood CO area, I know she can help. She is cheaper and better than Sylvan because it is a one-on-one approach and you can sit in on sessions and learn the teaching techniques as well. She is trained in Project Read and I've seen her help kiddos and get them back to grade level.

my little sister did Sylvan and my Mom was not pleased at all. There was hardly any one on one time, and after almost a year she had very little improvement. I have heard good things about huntington learning centers. Costs about the same, but you get individualized work
