Son Still Having Pain

My beautiful son broke both bones in his left arm last summer (He is right handed). It healed up pretty nicely. From time to time over the school year he said it still hurt but it never seemed to last very long. This morning I was putting sun screen on him before he went to his ball game, and when I did his left arm he winced pretty bad and said it had been hurting him for a few days, but he just didn’t tell me because he is 10 now and not a baby any more.
I am a little worried that his arm is still paining him, but I have never broke a bone so I am not sure if this is anything to worry about or if its normal. I will probably go on and take him into the Doc, just to have it checked, but also was wondering if this is normal. Has anyone here experienced this ether with them selves, their child, or even someone they know? Thanks for taking the time to help me out!!

This is NOT normal. There could be some infection somewhere in there, a twisted muscle, etc. You really need to get him to the orthopedist and have them figure this out.

Tell him he's not a baby - he's a big guy and is your GUIDE for helping you be the mom and take care of his medical health! Sweet kid!

Good luck and let us know how things turn out!

I agree with Dawn. Very possible there is an infection. Give him Motrin/Tylenol for the pain, schedule the appointment and the doctor may want an x-ray or just an antibiotic. Just be sure to be very detailed to your doctor. Let him/her know the pain your son is in and that he doesn't express pain much unless it really hurts.

A twinge here and there would not concern me, but it sounds like it has progressed to being more than that. I think you are wise to take him in to be rechecked. I broke my wrist last fall, the docs said the bone knitted beautifully but I still get an occasional twinge, just doesn't last long.

It has been 1 year and 5 months since I broke my left elbow something FIERCE (2 plates+12 screws+2 pins+2wires holding my arm together) and I still have wicked pain! Every day since I broke it, I have pain...EVERY.SINGLE.DAY!!! My orthopedic surgeon told me it would take around 2 years before I could no longer be aware of it and to expect to have mild pain for quite some time after...my physical therapist said to give it more like 5 years till I was un-aware of it any longer.

Not sure the extent of your son's break but my advice would be to take him in to have another x-ray and just get it looked at, it can't hurt right? But other than that, I say that him having some pain sounds normal to me...it's only been a year and breaks are kind of a big deal!

For peace of mind, take him in but I bet he is gonna be OK.

I have broken both wrists and since my mid 30s have experienced early onset arthritis in them because of the breaks (as predicted by my doc).

However, I also found a solution. I do some wrist yoga whenever I notice the twinge. Press the palms together and stretch all that tissue - for a minute or more per stretch. I do that for a couple days and voila - wrists are good to go.
