My 2 year old son stepped on cactus. It is the very fine kind. We took him to the ER last night and they said they could not help him. He says it hurts, poor baby. What can I do to help him not hurt or get infection and make sure it is all out?

So What Happened?

I took him to his doctor. He said it just has to heel itself. It's not infected so nothing he can do. Thank you for all your answers. His feet look way better now.

For the pain, I would say ice (wrapped in a wash cloth or paper towel,) and for the infection maybe neosporin.
Good luck! Poor baby! ;)

Actually, the pus helps to get it out... they can stay in the body for a long time, sometimes for decades before they come out, so Ice it and some tylenol... NO Asprin
Good luck

My son did this not once, but twice. The 2nd time the ER doctor showed me how to "paint" his foot with iodine, the cactus spines show up really well then. But you aren't going to be able to get all of them. Good luck.

Some motrin/ibuprofen and maybe a good foot soak with some epsom salt or something like that will help. At least then they may be loose enough to try and pull with tweezers.

Good luck
