Son Sleeps with His Eyes Open?!

I know it may sound strange and it is nothing new, looking back at his newborn pics he was doing the same thing. He sleeps with his eyes open, not all the way but between a tiny slit to almost half way open! Any of your kids do that? He goes for a sleep study soon and I will mention it to them, but I wanted to ask you all too. Thanks!~N. J.

What can I do next?

My daughter does it- and so did I. I may still, for all I know. It may not be average, but for us it IS normal. I know it definately has no effect on my daughter's ability to sleep well: open eyes or not, freight trains through the living room can't wake her up!

My son did that (and does it now!). It scared the living daylights out of me. But, my doctor told me that it's nothing major and just relax. Surprisingly, after that consult, I had noticed that my husband does the same thing! :)

My son used to do this when he was a baby. He outgrew it as he got older. He is now 7 years old. How old is your son now? What do the doctors say? The one thing that the dr's were worried about with my son was that he would get dry eyes. I would try and close his eyes when he was sleeping. Let me know what happens. I am sure everything will be ok. Keep me posted.

Both of my children have slept with their eyes partly open from birth and so have I. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. It usually just means that he is in a deep sleep (a very restful sleep).

hi N. oh yes all 3 girls do this. My 20 yr old still does. It was funny her husband (boyfriend at the time) was freaked out the first time. He said i was talking to her and finally noticed she was sleeping. He said i thought she was in a trance i was out of there. My 7yrold and 20 month old do the same. No problems here with it. Let me know how the test go. Good luck

N.: I have always slept with my eyes open - like you said, not all the way, but up to 1/2 way. My 3-1/2 year old daughter does exactly the same. I've never had any problems from it except for relatively dry eyes - so I use lots of moisture drops in my eyes. Mention it to your son's doctor, but I wouldn't worry too much.

N., I sleep with my eyes open and so does my daughter. It is a great way to convince people that you are keeping an eye on them.
