Son Seems in Pain - Uncomfortable

Hello everyone. About 8 weeks ago I noticed my son holding his head down after he ate like he was uncomfortable - maybe indigestion or pain? It seems that he's uncomfortable after he eats - leans his head to the side, hold his stomach/chest a bit. He's 3 so I've asked him if it hurts and he kept saying no. Recently (last 2 weeks), he's said yes (nodded) and showed me where - kind of stomach/esophagus area. He has never been a good eater and it's getting worse.

He never has had reflux or anything like that. Has anyone seen this in their kids? I plan to take him to the doctor, but worry that the doctor won't be able to tell much either.

Any suggestions? Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses and information. I'm taking my son to the doctor tomorrow to see what's going on with him and start from there.

Thank you!

I'd definately see a dr who might try some acid reflux meds on him. The meds should work immediately. So if you dont see a difference after a couple days take him back in and demand some kind of test to see if he has an obstruction or faulty valve......

Lisa already hit it with one of my suggestions.

Another is an ulcer; uncommon but not unheard of in young kids. What I'm thinking of is caused by the H. pylori bacteria and can be easily wiped out with some antibiotics.

Ask your peds for a referral to a peds gastroenterologist. That's a good start.

Good luck and God Bless

Maybe Celiac Disease/Gluten Intolerance? It affects the small intestine. (I have Celiac Disease, which is why that pops into my mind). Maybe some other food intolerance?

To test for Celiac, it is a blood test that looks for three indicators. Let me know if you have any questions about it. Or, you could bring it up to his dr. & see what he/she thinks.

You can get reflux at any time. It does hurt.
Try to get an appt with a pediatric gastro doc, to be sure.

I'm a nurse and this is a shot in the dark, but investigate schotzkes rings. They are rings of cartilage that don't stretch a/ the esophagus, and kind cause a mild structure. It's easily managed, but regardless would follow up with a gastrointerstinal MD. Dr Sirlin is strictly pediatrics and has a great rreputation. Good luck....I hope you find a solution!

HI, M.! It really does sound like reflux or indigestion problems. It is possible(especially if anyone in your family has problems w/ reflux) even if he has never had it before; my son's started at 3. The doctor can prescribe him some liquid acid reducer (Ranitidine is what my son uses) that you would give him only when he is having problems. My son would start vomiting with his and the medicine has helped him tremendously. Hope this helps!

I have acid relux and get pains in my stomach/chest often. They are right under my chest in the center of that area. It gets really tender and sore to the touch but I also get pains in that area too.

M., It sounds like it could be indigestion/reflux. I want to throw something else out there that sounds like what my husband went through when he was a kid (and still does), just be aware of -- eosinophillic esophagitis (narrow esaphagus due to allergic reaction to something he eats) is more common in males than females. My husband had this when he was a little boy and only found out about it a couple years ago. Doctors can see this by doing the barium swallow. After or during eating, my husband would stop and become very, very uncomfortable and would feel like his food was stuck. He would have to walk around to feel better.
Your son may not have this at all, but just something to keep in mind. My hubby wished he had found out when he was a kid.

If your baby is hurting then don't take "I don't know what it could be" or "I don't see anything wrong" for an answer. Keep trying until you get the right answers. Your little guy isn't going to say he hurts if he doesn't. I would make the Dr. run tests if he doesn't have any idea just by looking at him. I know you want your little one to feel better so don't give up.
Good Luck

Though a regular doctor may not be able to tell much, a GI specialist can. If you take him to your regular pediatrician, ask about getting a referral to a GI doc who can do a scope if necessary to check for signs of reflux or any other issue.
