My son is very sick. He has been throwing up since 10:30 PM Thursday night. I took him to the hospital friday morning at 2:30 AM. They said he was very dehydrated and just had the flu. Well he never got better. He sleeps all the time. Doesn't hardly move. Has no intrest in drinking or eating anything. Threw everything up that he drinks and eats. Called the doctor all weekend and they just told us too watch him. We then took him back to the emergency room yesterday. They found out that he has a UTI, Robuts Virus and the GI Bug and again was very dehydrated. How come you can't find anyone to tell you what is wrong from the beginning and why does everyone just blow you off when your baby is sick? I don't understand I don't think doctors care enough about others and they aren't willing to help you. Pleas let me know what I should do about the doctors and if there is a better one out there to help when my babies are sick. Thank you and have a wonderful day.

What can I do next?

I don't know the doctors around here, as I haven't lived here long, but one thing you NEED to do, is DEMAND answers! I had trouble with getting answers in the Springs, and I literally chewed a doctor out! I don't care what doctors say, mommies know when something is wrong with their babies, that's the way nature works! You know your children, if there is something wrong, demand that the doctors find out what it is, from the start! Don't let it go, if you don't think their answer is accurate, demand that they do more tests, listen better! You may feel like a broken record, but make sure they know everything that is "off" with your child, even if you have to tell them, a million times! Just go with your mommy gut! Mommy guts are NEVER wrong! Good luck and take care!

I know how you feel. My daughter was two months old and admitted to Children's Hospital for malnutrition. Why, not because I wasn't feeding her but because she had a protein allergy and was not able to tolerate the formula she was on. She was extremely underweight and had horrible digestive issues. THey sent me for testing for cystic fibrosis, cysts on her liver, on and on...what was it, a simple change in formula. Because of her malnutrition, my daughter contracted a bacterial infection in her gut, was in the hospital for 9 days and on IV antibiotics for 24 days. It was a nightmare and all the doctor had to do was switch her formula.

The GI Specialist at Children's said the pediatrician I go to is the one he recommends and one of the best in the state. So I decided to stay, because now they know my daughter's health and it would be better than starting over with a new one. But I had a very serious heart to heart with the doctor. I told them their ignorance bordered on malpractice and I was extremely disappointed in all their staff for shooting for the extreme diagnosis and missing the obvious. This seemed to work for me. They are very, very responsive to me and I get calls back from the doctor, not the nurse, when I call them.

I suggest talking with them, letting them know how you feel and that you are disappointed in their service. I think if you mention the mis-diagnosis as bordering malpractice they listen.

Good luck, but I believe your child's best advocate is you and if you believe your child is sick, never give up finding someone who will listen.

Hi D.,
That sounds sooo frustrating! I don't blame you for being angry! Part of the porblem may have been taking him to the hospital over and over- most ER doctors are busy anddon't generally treat a whole lot of kids so they can miss things pediatricians wouldn't. How is his regular Doctor? If you don't feel that his pediatrician is responsive, it may be time to find another! Goo luck through this!

I have been there before, my daughter was 9 months at the time and had a fever of 103.9 and my doc told me not to worry about it until she got up to 105. Thank God that never happened but I have long felt frustrated by the doctors just pushing your concerns aside. Sorry that I have no advice on a better doctor but thought you would feel better to know other moms feel the same.
