My son just had his tonsils and adenoids removed 8 days ago. I did not realize that the recovery from the surgery was going to be so hard on him. His throat still hurts, he whines and cries constantly and gets frustrated with the pain when the pain medication that he is on wears off. He does not sleep at night and constantly wakes up crying. Help! Has anyone had experience with this. My son is 4 years old. This breaks my heart to see him like this. Can anyone tell me how long this recovery will take and any suggestions on how to make him feel more optimistic that the pain will go away?? Please help!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It took literally all of the 14 days for my son to fully recover. Now he does not snore anymore and sleeps alot better at night. Now we can work on potty training at night!! Thanks for all the advice.!

Hi Barbara! My middle child had her adenoids removed when she was 3. And she felt perfectly fine the next day. I agree with the others who have responded. He shouldn't still be having pain. I would call the doc and let them know he is still having problems. Best of luck!

My son was barely 2 when they took his tonsils and adnoids out. Plus put tubes in the ears. It was about 11/2 before it got better. The only gave him over the counter meds for pain. Make sure he has cold everything that is smooth. My son had a problem with icee stuff scratching his thoart.

barbara i thought the only symptom he might experience afterwards is difficulty talking but only the first 24 hrs. call the ENT even his pediatrician if you can't get in touch with the first one.
doesn't sound right.
good luck

Hi Barbara,

My son just had the same surgery this past spring. He woke up during the night as well, he totally refused the pain meds so he was just on Tylenol. What I had to do was no matter what I thought he needed a dose every 4 hours, if I let it go longer he would end up in pain and then it would take even longer to get some relief. Then on day 8 or 9 BAM, really bad pain. I called the ENT and they said it is "referred" pain and it is very common, mostly in the jaw & ears, but in a 4 year old, pain is pain. I would say w/ several ups and downs, my son took every bit of the 2 weeks to recover and go back to "normal" and sleeping peacefully at night.

As for infection, I would be surprised if your son isnt already on an antibiotic, I think they send you home w/ a RX for 2 weeks worth to fend off any potential for infection.

So in a nutshell here is my advice. Call the DR. to set your mind at ease, that is what they are there for...but dont jump the gun on it being anything serious!

Hi Barbara ~ my son had his removed when he was 4 also, he was up and about and eating the night of his surgery. A few days later he ended up with a fever and pain ~ his sight had become infected! Call your ENT and tell them what is going on ~ it may be infected and need an antibiotic. Hope you find this helpful ~ blessings ~ J.
