Son Becomes Very Winded in Activities

I wanted to know if this is something else or should I have him checked for anything serious. He at times becomes very very winded to the point where he begins coughing terribly and then almost chokes and pukes, but then he seems better. I am not sure if maybe he has asthma as it does run in the family or if he just over exerts himself into this state. He is five going on six and this only happens when he is very very excited and playing really hard and yelling. Though his instances seem to be fewer and fewer after talking with my husband.

He probably has exercise induced asthma, and can continue to be very active if he has an inhaler. I've had it for 32+ years now, very manageable.

I see Dr. Morgan at AZ Asthma Institute (same website Suzanne listed) azsneeze.com

Hi K.,
My son is 4 and has asthma. He does the exact same thing. He usually does it more when he has recently had a stuffy nose. He can get a sinus infection really easily, so usually antibiotics help when he is coughing and throwing up. My son's first signs of asthma were coughing at night, and then more coughing with exercise. He had really bad acid reflux as a kid and I think he throws up super easy.

Hopefully this helps a bit. Best of luck. It sounds like he has a mild case of asthma.

Hi there,
It certainly sounds as though he may have exercise induced asthma. Also you might consider changing your household cleaning products, laundry detergent and any other chemicals he might come into contact with to something that is non-toxic. Recent studies have shown that their is a higher incidence rate of asthma because of toxic chemicals in and around the home. I would be happy to make some suggestions! Good Luck!

Hi K.,
It sounds like exercise induced asthma. My daughter has that. She uses an inhaler before she exercises and that seems to control it.
Good luck

Hi K.,

I'm a respiratory therapist, and though not an expert, it sounds as though your son may have excercise induced asthma. I'd take him in to see your pediatrician, if the pediatrician feels your son needs further evaluation, you may be referred to a pulmonologist, or an allergist. Take note if your son gets a bit blue around the mouth during his breathless, coughing and or ckoking periods. This would indeed indicate lack of enough oxygen getting to his lungs....

Good Luck!!

It might be exertional asthma. My son and I have it. The doctor took an oxygen measurement. Then had my son run out the back door, as we watched him, run in the parking lot. When he came in, the doctor re-measured his oxygen level. His lips were blue and his oxygen level was very low. The doctor gave him an inhaler for those times. That took care of it.

Definitely get him checked for asthma.... my son was 6 when he first started having symptoms like you've described... thankfully, we caught it and learned how to treat it.

I know it sounds scary... but it can be life threatening, and you would never forgive yourself if something happened that was asthma related.

In our family we have a trachea disorder. Sounds much the same. When exerting ourselves our trachea shrinks and we aren't able to get enough oxygen into our lungs. Most of the time we carry an albuteral inhaler and a puff or two on that cures the problem.

I would have him checked just in case. It can't hurt to look into asthma or other issues like pulmonary hypertension. You would hate for a chronic condition to go untreated and lead to any further issues down the road. Good luck, H =)
