Son Almost 3 and Won't Poo-poo on the Potty

My son will be 3 years old in December. He's doing pretty good with pee-peeing on the potty. He won't go on his own, but he's got decent bladder control and as long as I remind him to sit on it every 30 minutes or so, he's been staying pretty dry. However, he has yet to poop on the potty. He'll sit on the potty for 15 minutes and won't do a thing and then, once he gets up, he poops in his pants in less than 5 minutes. I don't know what to do. I've tried tempting him with rewards, but its not sinking in. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

My son is the same age, he will be 3 in Dec. and he just went poop this week consistently :) Yeah! But he did the same thing it took a month of not going before this week. Just keep at it, we did tell him that he could go to the store and buy his ride on dump truck that he wanted from a friends house when he pooped in the potty! It was so cute he finished then immediately got my keys and said let's go get my dump truck now :)

My son was 3 1/2 before he was consistent with pooping in the potty. What finally worked for us was I made a chart with numbers and every time he pooped in the potty he got a star. When he reached a certain number (that I highlighted on the chart) he would get to pick out a toy at the store (within a certain price range). My son picked out his toy early on so I kept telling him we wouldn't get it until he pooped in the potty so many times. We did this twice, the first time he had to reach 25, the second time around 75 and we haven't had an issue again (except for the occasional accident). Good luck!

Oh boys are so tough! My son was 3 before he pooped on the potty. i was out running errands and my husband was home with him. After our son would pee he would ask for a diaper. My Husband said no and made him sit on the potty until he couldn't hold it any more. Now that is NOT the way to do it because it can cause problems down the road. It just happened that it worked for us.

Does your son have a specific "schedule" when he poops? If so around that time sit him on the potty and read to him or talk to him. Trying to distract him may work a little.

Good luck

both of my boys were over 4 before they were fully trained, as has been most of their male friends. give it another year before you worry about it.

It took my daughter a two months to finally go poop in the potty. I am not sure what the problem was, but she didn't want to go. I never put pull ups or diapers on her so you can imagine how tired I became of cleaning poop. Diego is her favorite show so I went and got her boy underwear told her that Deigo and baby jag. would be so upset if she pooped on them. That day she went poop in the potty and never had an accident. Could be worth a try.

My son will be 3 in January and absolutely refuses to poop or pee in the potty. He has done it twice, but that was months ago. He definately knows what it is.. most of our friends with boys seem to be a little more delayed than the girls we know.
